Sen. John Kerry's political guru, Robert Shrum: "We're just going to stay in Washington while getting ready for our move [to New York, where Shrum, starting next month, will teach at NYU]. My aim is to stay out of the 'limited traffic zone.' How am I feeling? Disappointed. Right now, I'm waiting for a camera crew from CNN to interview me about Karl Rove. Just think, a switch of 55,000 votes in Ohio, and I wouldn't have been doing this interview. But you've got to be gracious."
I think he means if 55,000 Bush voters voted for Kerry, they would have won. Technically, it's closer to 60,000. But hey, no one ever said Dems were good at math.
He's saying a switch of 55K votes from Bush to Kerry...which would be a 110K vote difference.
I now get Shrum's point (even though the number keeps shifting in the media). Maybe I should join the Democratic Party? NOT!
55K switch means 110,000 vote margin.
The fallacy is thinking there would have been an isolated switch in Ohio and no other states. It's likely if Bush had lost Ohio by that margin he would have lost other states as well.
Shrum's point has a hat on it.
Okay, then: a switch of 5,500 in Wisconsin -- or fewer Chicago union guys bussed in for the day to vote -- and we'd have an "Ohio-proof" margin.
He is almost accurate. A switch of 55K voters from Bush to Kerry means 55K less votes for Bush and 55K more for Kerry. Margin goes down by 110K.
Bush won by 110K
actually means the same as
A switch of 55K votes would have made it equal.
Of course, Shrum prefers to say the second, so that the margin looks less.

Well, I think Shrum is assuming the "swing" was 55k, meaning the actual margin would be something like 100K. He's obviously trying to make it sound like a thin margin, when in fact it was a solid red state.

Sorry for the SPAM, but I did it to make a point. 55K is not a trivial number.
Shrum's not just any old loser - he's a perpetual, continuous, repeat loser and interviewing him is kinds like the Miller Lite commercials that featured the retired baseball player whose career had been a complete disaster. I'm not a big sports fan, but I remember that having him as a spokeman was a very successful "inside joke".
As to why NYU students would want to learn their craft from a tried and true loser is a mystery. We can only hope that they learn well and go forth to manage the campaigns of lefty Democrats.
Actually, I don't feel spammed at all. That was a remarkably clever way to illustrate just how stupid and desperate the Democrats are right now. Well done.
