ANCHORS AWEIGH
New York Post ^ | 1/19/05 | MICHAEL STARR and PAUL THARP

In its search to replace Dan Rather and regain its stature, CBS might hire several anchors for different cities — but experts think Katie Couric won't be among them.

CBS Chief Les Moonves wouldn't comment on Couric, but suggested yesterday he can grow his own stars — at much lower salaries — and create a trendy new format for young TV viewers in the Internet age.

Moonves, who discussed his anchor problem publicly for the first time, said young viewers are turned off by Rather's style of "Moses from-the-mountaintop" proclamations.

He said CBS wants to reshape its news show to be "younger and more relevant, something that younger people can relate to as opposed to that guy preaching from the mountaintop about what we should and should not watch."

[snip]

Asked twice, Moonves wouldn't rule out a role on the evening news for Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, whose popular "The Daily Show" skewers politicians and the news media each night. The Comedy Central channel is owned by CBS parent, Viacom.

Why not? SeeBS couldn't be more of a joke than it is now.

If they could talk Rush into a pay cut, maybe. Otherwise, they can't afford him.

To rephrase the old joke:

Our viewership was so small that we didn't have a regular town liar.

So we took turns.

Once again, it shows just how out of touch these people are. This goes well beyond "young viewers." In fact, I doubt that many "young viewers" would tune in regardless of who's "doing" the American public on the program.

But people with a brain and a sense of self-respect also are "turned off" by Blather's self-righteous holier-than-thou Barbara Streisand.

"CBS Chief Les Moonves...suggested...he can grow his own stars"

But why bother, Les, when you have such a fitting array to choose from--Larry Flynt, Whoopi Goldberg, Jason Blair, Chevy Chase, Jerry Springer, Michael Moore... The list goes on and on. Maybe Connie Chung would come in to save the day; she might even bring Maury along. Say, every considered Charlie Manson?

I think they should get Max Headroom.

Where's he been since the early 80's?
