Tommy Douglas was the choice as "greatest Canadian" on a TV show by the CBC. He was for 20 years the Premier of Saskatchewan and created the very first medicare program in Canada. He was a very effective speaker, a preacher, and long served in the (federal) House of Commons after his Premiership.

While Tommy was a socialist and I heartedly disagreed with him many times when he led the federal NDP, I definitely respected him. Had I lived in Saskatchewan in his era, with things as tough there as they were, I might even have voted for him a time or two.

Personally (for greatest Canadian)I voted for Banting the inventor of insulin.

Thanks for the answer. For what it's worth, I do have some fond memories from the "old school" Canada. Spent some time in the area called the Lake of the Woods in the late fifties. Really nice people, though they drank their beer warm :) Caught & ate Grayling, Pike & Walleye. Had a great time.
You younger folks may find this hard to believe, but back then the Canadian Dollar was worth more than the greenback.
But this was before the Liberals took over.
