Tommy Douglas was the choice as "greatest Canadian" on a TV show by the CBC. He was for 20 years the Premier of Saskatchewan and created the very first medicare program in Canada. He was a very effective speaker, a preacher, and long served in the (federal) House of Commons after his Premiership.
While Tommy was a socialist and I heartedly disagreed with him many times when he led the federal NDP, I definitely respected him. Had I lived in Saskatchewan in his era, with things as tough there as they were, I might even have voted for him a time or two.
