TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian man, upset that his 9-year-old son was benched during a hockey game, allegedly choked the team's coach in a fit of rage, Toronto police said on Monday.

The father, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, allegedly reached over a partition to grab the coach after the boy was kept on the bench during Sunday's game.

"Several attempts were made by witnesses to stop the attack but they were unable to before the victim collapsed to the floor," Toronto police said in a release on Monday.

Hmmm... Hockey isn't enough like soccer (football) for some of the parents, eh? :-)

The incident comes on the heels of several other reports of parents' misbehavior at their children's hockey games. The mother of an 11-year-old was banned from Toronto-area arenas in 2004 after exposing her bra and shaking her breasts in an apparent attempt to intimidate the opposing team.

Good to see he is setting a fine example for his son and all of the other youngsters there. If you can't be a man and accept the fact that you (or rather your son) are going to be on the bench at times, go ahead and assult somebody. After all, it's not your fault! The coach forced you to do something! That's the way this society (and Canadian) is headed.

Some people are just crazy. One summer, while I was in college, I worked in a children's day care. Another teacher there told me that on two separate occasions she had been held a gun point by an angry parent.

The father, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban

How do I get me one of them thar 'publication bans'? While not quite as good as a 'get out of jail free' card, it's still pretty valuable...

What was the score in the game at the time ?

Only joking. The father is an idiot who should get his own "Hockey One, Hockey Two, Hockey Three" from the authorities. Umpires and referees in a sport are vital to the enjoyment of a game. Anarchic hockey would be a very sorry spectacle to watch.

Publication ban on what, TROP? No shortage of crazed parents at kids' games but if publishing the perp's name is verboten, I do wonder if it's Mohammed.

"Several attempts were made by witnesses to stop the attack but they were unable to ..

They were probably trying to grab the guy's arms and pull them away. They could have grabbed another part of his anatomy to get him to let go.
