Microsoft is showing off its Smarter Retailing initiative this week at the National Retail Federation (NRF) convention in New York. Several Microsoft partners are announcing products based on, or supporting, Windows Embedded for Point of Service, a specialized version of XP Embedded aimed at the retail and hospitality industries
..................
Hewlett-Packard -- will offer Windows Embedded for POS on its rp5000 POS device, a PC-like device with additional functionality to support POS requirements.
.............
Microsoft claims that Windows Embedded for POS will be the first retail-optimized software platform to provide plug-and-play functionality to enable retail peripherals to be easily installed and managed. Additionally, Microsoft says that it is collaborating with 40 companies to develop solutions compatible with the new Windows Embedded-based POS OS.

Meanwhile Microsoft Windows CE and Microsoft Windows Embedded continues to rock, with Microsoft Windows CE PDA's having already caught up with and overtaken Palm in the PDA market, and Microsoft Windows Embedded now firmly in the lead for Embedded OS's.
"Microsoft Now Leads in PDA, Embedded OS
By Sean Michael Kerner
Two new studies show Microsoft (Quote, Chart) is now leading both the embedded operating system category as well as in PDAs.
According to statistics by research firm Gartner (Quote, Chart), Microsoft's Windows CE was the leading operating system for PDA deployments in the third quarter of 2004.
This marks the first time that Microsoft has beat perennial PDA OS leader PalmOne in the category that Palm helped to pioneer. Palm OS shipments declined by 28 percent, according to Gartner, and its market share fell from 46.9 percent in 3Q03 to 29.8 in 3Q04.
Windows CE recorded 32.6 percent growth and saw its share hit 48.1 percent up from 41.2 percent last year
...........Linux also lost ground in the sector. Gartner found a negative growth rate of 49.5 percent and reported only a 0.9 percent market share.
...........The PDA market isn't the only new embedded market that Microsoft has won either. According to research firm Venture Development Corporation (VDC), Microsoft was the leading vendor of embedded OS for 2003. VDC placed Microsoft ahead of Wind River, Palm and Symbian. "

Windows Embedded-based POS OS Good quote. Very true, a POS OS.

"Just wait until the first MyDoom virus for embedded operating systems is released into the wild."
Sour grapes. :)

Sour grapes. No it isn't.

"Good quote. Very true, a POS OS"
I am still laughing at you.
Microsoft conquers yet another market..and Linux is reduced to..wait for it.. 0.9% of the market!!
Hurts doesn't it?
To: antiRepublicrat
"No it isn't."
Hehehehehehehehehehehe

Microsoft conquers yet another market..and Linux is reduced to..wait for it.. 0.9% of the market!! Linux is growing in this market, too (thus the reason for SCO's Autozone suit). Basically, it's a race for Microsoft and Linux to take over from the old NIXes that run most of these systems.
To: KwasiOwusu
Hehehehehehehehehehehe No, seriously, it isn't.
To: antiRepublicrat
Fiction : "Linux is growing in this market, too "
FACT:"Gartner found a negative growth rate of 49.5 percent and reported only a 0.9 percent market share"..for Linux
For your info, NEGATIVE growth is NOT growth. :)

Linux has never been a factor in the PDA market...MSFT is kicking Palm's butt, yes.

"No, seriously, it isn't."
Yeah.
And Algore isn't bitter about President Bush being President of the United States instead of him either.

For your info, NEGATIVE growth is NOT growth. :) That's for PDAs, not POS. Read further about embedded Linux, " embedded Linux would appear to be gaining momentum in the space."
Oh, and "Microsoft's success to date is definitely contingent on our strong industry partnerships." In other words, leveraging its power to gain marketshare instead of gaining marketshare through superior software.

So far Microsoft has maintained a lock on the PC world.
And done so in light of the fact that WINDOWS is a Unruly, unconforming nightmare of code.
Apple had it right. Set up primitives for the operating system, and force all third party vendors to conform to those primitives.
Windows has to be rewritten all the time to conform to 'a new standard'. Bill Gates modeled his company plan after IBM's.
Make the OS 'able' to work with anything, but only by buying new hardware and software. Invent new STANDARDS on every release. Promise upward and downward compatibility, but don't mention it requires purchasing more hardware and software. Make more money off selling 'adapters' than you do off the original product.

And Algore isn't bitter about President Bush being President of the United States instead of him either. There's this thing called a dictionary, and it tells you the meaning of words and phrases. Try one, you might learn something. I'd hoped you might reference one before continuing to follow my obvious track, but I guess I overestimated you (never thought I'd appreciate B2K, but I do now).
Al Gore never said "The Presidency is a crappy office to hold anyway" after he lost, and this poster never said "Who cares if Microsoft is making headway, the POS market sucks so we don't want it." These are examples of proper usage of the phrase "sour grapes."
To: antiRepublicrat
"That's for PDAs"
It is.
And its PDA's I was talking about when I mentioned 0.9% market share in my post. :)
" embedded Linux would appear to be gaining momentum in the space."
Microsoft still trumps Linux in embedded as well, as in:
"But this would also appear to be at least one sector where Microsoft doesn't see Linux as a threat"
"Oh, and "Microsoft's success to date is definitely contingent on our strong industry partnerships." In other words, leveraging its power to gain marketshare instead of gaining marketshare through superior software"
I am still laughing at you.
Your shrillness is starting to grate in the ear. :)
BTW, "strong industry partnerships" is called good business.

"Apple had it right."
Apple has 1.8% market share.
Consumers don't think Apple is right.
And they have voted with their check books.
