Embattled San Jose City Councilman Terry Gregory resigned this morning as part of a deal with prosecutors after he was charged with 11 misdemeanors related to his conduct in office.

Shortly after the charges were announced, Gregory held a City Hall news conference announcing his resignation. Gregory said in a statement that he accepted ``total and full responsibility'' for his actions and was ``prepared to do what's right in facing the consequences of of any mistakes that I have made.''

He also said he is ``at peace'' with himself because he has ``always worked only for the betterment of our community.'' He said he would, on the advice of his attorney, remain silent about investigations by the district attorney and the City Council.

``This allowed only one side of the story to be told,'' he said. ``As a private citizen, I will be sharing more details in the near future.''

Under the terms of a plea bargain, Gregory won't go to jail, the district attorney said. But he may be placed on probation, ordered to perform community service, and to pay various fines and fees as well as restitution as determined by a judge. The maximum penalty for each offense is six months in the county jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

Too bad. He would look good in stripes.

I think he should get roadside rubbish duty on weekends... It'll keep him out of the bars.

This whole thing goes back to when he got a DUi ... and got known. :-)

Time to slam the coffin lid on this politico and it's onto Shmelley and PeRATa... and who knows? ;-)

Hate to say it, but this all looks pretty Mickey Mouse. I'm not saying that what he did was correct, but there's a difference between accepting a round of golf and embezzling $50,000. If every elected official stepped down for "failing" to disclose gifts then we'd be without elected officials (which is not necessarily a bad thing)....

Not only DumocRAT but a black DumocRAT at that so we know he was only trying to make up for years of racism of black elected officials who never got on the gravy train that white officials received.

I hear ya. Out here in San Jose, ethics has become the theme of late.

Gregory's undoing was a result of the time in which he served his folk to some degree, and hisself a bit too aggressively and got called to explain his actions and couldn't..

There are bigger fish to fry here in the end, but it's a good warm-up act tho, if nothing else.

Eeeeeeeexcellent. I was thinking the same thing.

Now to get rid of Cindy Chavez and Ron Gonzalez, then we'll be getting somewhere.

And yesterday I got word that conservatives have finally gotten control of the Santa Clara County GOP central committee.

Things are (finally) looking up!

I heard the homorable Cindy Chavez (ahem) on the radio and they were discussing whether Gonzales would appoint someoneor there would be an election. Chavez was very strongly for an election. And Cortese was in favor of an election too. Looks like that's what will happen.

You are right, Gregory was penny ante. The one who go for the serious dough are still in office. $50,000 is chump change, compared to all the money you can get out of Cisco.
