This would be a heck of a benfit to the State of NY. Right now, NYC is the tail that wags the dog. Making NYC a state would leave the rest of the citizens of NY state in control of their own fate.
Meanwhile NYC would either go bankrupt or else reform and become the US answer to Hong Kong.

Are they trying to make us all leave? I would expect a special Republican Tax.

I just seceded from my state and have formed a new state. I'll be sending my two senators, a mastiff and a mutt to represent me. Just send their salaries to me by direct deposit so I can buy them filet mignon instead of Kibbles n' Bits.

something must be done!
don't know if this is it, it would be good for the state but,
I'm not thrilled about 2 more dem senators.
I would go for it if Hillary and Chuckie would stay there and then we could elect 2 of our own.
It is a very good possibility we could be Red....

A better idea is to let NYC secede from the Union and become another beggar state. We don't need two more left wing senators. This might work well with Chicago too. Let them secede and take all of the crooked politicians with them. This would let Illinois become an honest state again.

It's worth considering. Maybe all of Long Island plus Westchester County should go with NYC. The remainder of NY might then be competitive for senatorial races and for the Presidential electors (I think it would have something like 7 million population, so maybe 12 or 13 electoral votes).
But could 51 stars be arranged in a suitable pattern for the flag?
To: nickcarraway
You know what? I can't say I'm totally opposed to this.
Just make sure they take LI as well.

As a refugee from NYC, I think it better to allow them to secede from the Union, become an independent country.

US Constitution, Article IV, Section 3: New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress

Wow.
What a splendid idea.
Bush would be able to win an election in the real New York sometimes, thus making NYC's huge population not as important. They would be sidelined just like D.C. into a sideshow.
What a great idea. Secede.

Oh please can we do this to Seattle. They can call it KurtCobainia, and the butt-ugly Experience Music Project can be their Capital building. Then they can put the giant statue of lenin located in the Freemont district, on the center of the new State Flag.

No. This would embolden DC's efforts for statehood; that polity is so dysfunctional that Al Sharpton could conceivably be elected as a DC senator.
