(Compass) - Eritrean authorities extended their crackdown on organized religion to Roman Catholics, jailing 25 members of the Catholic Church during a wedding rehearsal in Asmara on January 9.

Police inexplicably entered the building and took the entire wedding party to jail, where they remained under arrest as of yesterday.

The arrest marked the first reported crackdown against Eritrea’s Catholic community, which enjoys “official” recognition by the government, along with Orthodox and Lutheran Christians and Muslims.

The same Sunday morning, security police swooped down on a wedding ceremony in Barentu and arrested the 67 evangelical Christians present.

All the prisoners – among them a number of elderly people and young children -- reportedly were to be taken to the Sawa Military Training Center for “military punishment.”

Meanwhile, Compass has confirmed that 25 of the 60 Rema Charismatic Church members arrested at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Asmara have been released after signing a pledge not to participate in such meetings again.

Looks like the ACLU has another candidate for their Christian persecutor of
2005 award.

Ok, Publius, since you are so knowledgeable about the area, why are there so many Eritreans here in Seattle? I always found it interesting that they chose to settle here, of all places.

Eritrea - Religion: Although reliable statistics are not available, approximately 50 percent of the population are Sunni Muslim and approximately 40 percent are Orthodox Christian. The population also includes a small number of Eastern Rite and Roman Catholics (5 percent), Protestants (2 percent), smaller numbers of Seventh-Day Adventists, and less than 1,500 members of Jehovah's Witnesses. A small minority, perhaps 2 percent, practices traditional indigenous religions. Also present in very small numbers are practicing Buddhists, Hindus, and Baha'is. Generally the population in eastern and western lowlands predominantly is Muslim, and in the highlands the population predominantly is Christian.

The ACLU and the IslamoFascists are utterly united in their zeal to destroy Chrisianity, and Catholicism in particular.

>Rema Charismatic Church

This is not the sort of "church" that Christians should be too concerned about. It shares about as much with historic Christianity as does the Jehovah's Witness movement.

In the Nineties, we had a wave of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. At about the same time, we had a wave of immigrants from Ethiopia and other parts of the Horn of Africa. I could see this firsthand because they were moving to the neighborhood I lived in (in those days) in the northern edge of Seattle just before it becomes Shoreline.

As to why people picked a place so different from their homeland, I'm not sure. I suspect it was the booming economy, once we recovered from the prolonged recession of the early Nineties.

I put myself in the position of a Russian immigrant, used to snow and icy cold, settling in a place where winter is tolerable without vodka. Likewise, I imagined people from Africa, used to dust and drought, coming to a place where the summer is a joy to behold, and it rarely gets over 80 degrees.

I doubt it had anything to do with cultural similarities.

So it's OK with you to arrest religious believers peacefully worshipping if their particular set of beliefs doesn't meet your standards of orthodoxy. That's very Christian of you! (not)

I'm hardly a fan of the Charismatic movement, but they don't deserve to be thrown in jail for their beliefs. Neither do JW's or any non-Christian group. As long as the religion is non-violent, people should be free to practice it.
