NBC NEWS TODAY SHOW CO-HOST KATIE COURIC HAS BEEN APPROACHED ABOUT CBS NEWS ANCHOR JOB, NETWORK SOURCE TELLS TIME Sun Jan 16 2005 11:00:51 ET

CBS Rumored to be Interested in ABC News Nightline Anchor Ted Koppel

CBS Rising Star Mika Brzezinski, Daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, is Dark Horse Candidate

CNN’s Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running

New York – Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bush’s National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Rather—at least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (he’ll continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBS’s journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rather’s successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIME’s Sean Gregory reports.

The latest handicapping:

Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 months—when her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nation’s Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.

Ted Koppel The Nightline king’s contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldn’t have to worry about competing with Letterman.

John Roberts CBS’s chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.

Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.

Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.

Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.

Rush might have to stop calling her "The Perky One" if she did that.

I think Letterman is their Best Choice, at least Some of Us might watch then and then at least We would know that the Show would be more serious. CBS better look for some new Strategists! My vote goes to Ann Coulter.

Giving Letterman the anchor chair on CBS would be a brilliant move. They'd steal the John Stewart audience for sure.

However, you have violated the rules. You mentioned HER and didn't post a picture. I mentioned HER and posted a picture earlier, so I'm covered, but you're in deep trouble if you don't post a picture RSN (real soon now).

By the way, I second your vote for HER. They'll never do it, though.

Brit Hume probably isn't interested in the job, but he would be my pick.

I fail to see how they would think that Couric couls revive their ratings. Conservatives despise her as much as Rather.

She's somewhat an Oprah figure, beloved among middle-aged women.

The problem with Katie is that she doesn't ever seem to do actual news (as they see it of course), that is mostly done at the news desk, wouldn't a more logical choice be the person who actually anchors? Katie mostly seems to do puff pieces on osteoperosis and dangerous playground equipment... well, on second thought, that's pretty much what network 'news' is now anyways, so I guess she would be a good choice.

Surely this is a joke!

I stated earlier that I think this list is allowing them to position themselves to introduce someone else. Someone who we would scream about, except with someone like Katie (Eva Braun) Couic for contrast.

Look. Look. This person is REASONABLE. We were thinking of going with Katie Couric! In comparison this person (who ever it may be) can't be as bad, can they?

Sure seems a lot of misdirection on Heywart's part so he doesn't have to pay Roberts what he's worth.

Perfect!
Go from ultra-liberal to ultra-ultra liberal.
It's almost like the old media dinosaurs realize they are in their death kick and they just want it over with. Please, PLEASE make Perky the anchor. It will all be over quickly.

I like that word "had".....it rhymes with has...like in has-been.

Thanks...figures he had "control"...and even if he didn't, that wouldn't have stopped that ego from ad-libbing.

If they got Brit, they'd be the most watched name in news....at least for 1/2 hour everyday.

Betcha Brit has one hell of a sweet deal with Fox.

I guess their choices of Rather and Cronkite weren't accidental. Isn't it time we blame the owners as well as their lackeys?

Assigning blame is never as satisfying as watching the enemy self destruct...

We should simply stand back and stand quietly....
These morons are doing themselves some severe damage..
