I don't know why it's necessary to plant a flag in a particular neighborhood. Just live, like everybody else.My opinion is that they feel the more they get in the pubic's face, and the more the public gives them what they want, the more power they gain and the more legitimacy they feel they achieve.

Ironically, it's this sort of thing that I think is so alienating.
I have gay friends. I'm not a gay-hater. But to be honest, this makes me feel more territorial and defiant than I otherwise would, and protective of Spokane. We don't need another Seattle in this state. (I'm in Seattle.)

Absolutely right. Forced acceptance. They force it into our livingrooms via television. Their own sections of town and preferential treatment at businesses is next.
Speaking of TV, I wrote CBS a nasty email, letting them know their entire network is now blocked in our home. Last night was the second time they allowed Joan of Arcadia to be infiltrated by a gay story line. Only this time they had God as a gay man. Last straw for me, and I told them so. It was rude and arrogant! Not to mention anti-Christian, on a family tv program, about Christianity!
