KOFI CLINTON (clinton-Secretary-General of the U.N.?)

CAN you picture Bill Clinton as Kofi Annan's replacement as Secretary-General of the U.N.? Insiders say the former president agreed to partner up with his predecessor, No. 41, George H.W. Bush, in the tsunami relief effort partly for the international awareness to position him for the U.N. job. Clinton, who has been relatively low-profile since leaving the White House, is said to be ready for a new challenge now that he's finished with his autobiography. Assuming that Clinton's popularity in Africa and Europe would win the approval of the Security Council, the only fly in the ointment is the complications for wife Hillary's presidential hopes in 2008. "No one in the U.N. would want the President of the United States to be married to the head of the U.N., and therefore in control of Security Council votes," said one observer. Conversely, Americans wouldn't like the idea that the U.N. would be calling the shots in the Oval Office.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE GLOBES

EVER since 1982 — when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave Pia Zadora the Golden Globe for "New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture" — the nebulous group of supposed scribes has been accused of graft and amateurism. The award, it was widely assumed, had been "bought" for Zadora by her former megamillionaire husband, Meshulam Riklis.

All of this marketing-driven political 'speculation' is sickening to watch.

I first remember it prior to Hillary's run for Senate in 2000 (though I'm sure the technique's been used for quite a while before). They were putting out feelers for a Presidential run in 2004 for her but she 'graciously' brushed aside those notions so she could finish the term of the office that the people elected her to. Now she's already the Democratic frontrunner for 2008 run. It was shortly after Bill Clinton's term ended that this very UN secretary buzz started and now it's been continued.

Why don't candidates for offices just throw their hats in the ring instead of having some third-party do it for them? Odd that this buzz only seem to happen to Clintons....

Simple. The U.S. quits the U.N. I'd be willing to suffer four years of Hillary so we could leave the U.N.

Hey, I say let him be appointed to head of the UN. And the next day we declare it's charter withdrawn.

A low profile compared to what. We cannot get rid of him. He is everywhere. Feh!

It's too late for B J Clintoon.

The checks and controls that will come in after Oil for Food, would make it too hard even for B J to steal a decent amount easily and that's the only reason he would do it.

B J must absolutely detest Kofi, for queering the patch so badly.

God help us all! I wish they'd quit talking about this. It's like when everyone said Hillary wouldn't run for the Senate, and look at her now. This is scary--

Wrong, it does rotate from region to region but North America has never had a person as Sec. Gen.. I at one time thought we were not eligible but I was wrong we are. It is just there has never been a candidate put forth.

Bite your tongue! Under no circumstances would I want or allow Hitlery to be PoTUS. That is just incromprehensible. To start with she would put us right back in if we did manage to get out, not to mention the other damage she could inflict on us in 4 years.

Forget it! No way! No how! Not ever!

I just really wonder. I have often thought that they would never pick an American for this position. But, it looks like Clinton is really poised for that possibility. Read this that was in the news yesterday:

"Clinton aide lays out U.N. role." (Clinton gets 2-yr job to oversee UN spending for Tsunami relief)

"Clinton aide lays out U.N. role. Ex-president projected to spend two years as special envoy."

"UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Former President Clinton will spend at least two years in his new role as the U.N. envoy promoting recovery in tsunami-hit countries, his deputy said.

His job also will be to demand accountability for the unprecedented billions of dollars donated by countries and individuals, said Erskine Bowles....."

"...With the United Nations under attack over alleged corruption in the oil-for-food program in Iraq, sex abuse by U.N. peacekeepers and mismanagement by top officials, Bowles said it is essential to make sure the billions of dollars for tsunami recovery is used properly."

"We've got to be the champion of transparency and accountability," he said."

BS. Erskine Bowles already has a new job lined up after this UN gig; he's in line to be the next head of the UNC System of colleges here in NC.

I am confused by what you responded. The article does not say Erskine Bowles has been appointed to the position, but Clinton has. I also heard it announced on FOX about an hour ago. Am I misinterpreting your comment?

I would very much like to think Clinton has No chance at heading up the UN, and I have often said the same as you. But this new appointment sure puts him in the midst of the mix. If he does not head up the UN he will certainly gain a lot of influence there. He will spend two years working there, and Kofi retires just when Clinton's "job" is up.

Makes one wonder, who appointed Clinton to this position? Who created the position? How much of his time will be spent "politicking" vs checking the ledger book and holding people "accountable?" What do you think?

The U.N. is already in the toilet - clinton would just add to the smell.

Shocked that no one has brought this up......Hillary as President in '08 and Bill as Secretary General of the U.N.

Folks, there couldn't be a scarier combination than that!
