Even though not his fault, I believe that the skipper will become the scapegoat. Normal operandi for the Navy.

A variety of satellite data is now showing that many sea charts, including some that still rely on notations from the days when sailors navigated by the stars, are inaccurate. |
Did you catch that idiotic comment by the NYT reporter? Wow, you mean once upon a time, they really navigated by the stars? Why that must have been eons ago. Like maybe 10 or 20 years ago! Where do they keep finding bozo's like this?

I've seen several accounts that said the distance was 370
nm, which would be very close to the distance you calculated.
Note the mileage is not the 360-370 miles that this, and other, MSM article have been quoting, but rather 75 miles farther SSE.

I don't think it can, radar depends on reflection... I think certain frequencies penetrate the water well. This is a radar map of the Earth.
The map below has been sectioned into 16 clickable regions. Clicking on a particular region will open a new window showing the zoomed in region in more detail.

Very interesting stuff at the link. Unfortunately, that link doesn't seem to highlight the bathymetric use of LFAS, but I'm having 'puter problems and can't search for a better page.

Hey, wait just a darn minute! 370 nanometers, why that's smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. J

See #69 and #70. Ernest save yourself the keystrokes when I start the thread, unless it's become much more than a few hours old and I haven't made or received any comments in that time frame.

That map is quite disorienting. What is underwater? It has no legend. I find maps on the internet to be problematic because of scaling and orientation. If I didn't recognize the coastline between Korea and Vietnam, I'd be lost.
