Fox to Show PSAs on American Muslims

NEW YORK - In response to the portrayal of Muslims on Fox's "24," the network is offering its stations two public service announcements that show Muslims in a positive light.

The PSAs were produced by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, with whom Fox representatives met Wednesday. The 30- and 60-second spots showcase a diverse group of individuals, who in turn share personal descriptions and identify themselves as American Muslims.

Each PSA ends with the statement: "Muslims are part of the fabric of this great country and are working to build a better America."

They were introduced by CAIR last summer as part of a nationwide public awareness campaign.

The spots are being made available by Fox to both its owned and affiliated stations for airing throughout the broadcast day at the discretion of each station's management, said Fox spokesman Scott Grogin.

Rabiah Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Washington-based CAIR, voiced hope that Fox stations would slot the PSAs adjacent to "24," now airing every Monday, to "offer competing images of American Muslims."

The Fox series stars Kiefer Sutherland as a U.S. counterterrorism agent based in Los Angeles. With the beginning of the fourth season earlier this week, the story line found Sutherland battling a Muslim terror cell with members including a married couple and their teenage son. On an episode already aired, the Muslim mother poisoned her son's non-Muslim girlfriend after deeming her a threat to the cell's mission.

CAIR officials requested the meeting with Fox after viewing the first four "24" episodes, which "confirmed our concerns that the story was going in a dangerous direction: casting a shadow of suspicion on ordinary American Muslims."

Ahmed described the meeting with Fox as "constructive," while Grogin called it "the first step in the dialogue that has been opened between CAIR and `24.'"

No matter how many PSAs they run, there's still going to be that little bit of text contained in the Quran about killing Christians and Jews.

I'll be a little more open to them once I see a PSA telling me that they've decided to remove those parts.

FOX should not have allowed CAIR to produce the PSA's.
They should have turned to someone like Kabbani of the Islamic Supreme Council of America. That would have 'ticked-off' CAIR, but they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

I'm surprised they didn't demand Fox create a new series about the "heroic" Palestinian suicide bombers as they fight against the Zionist entity.

If America would just stop the nonsense by all this PC crap and just surrender so many lives could be saved.

Why must it be so long and drawn out?

Like it or not, Fox is part of the corporate world. There is very little political courage in the corporate world, and those of us who are not hostage to it must make up for the cowardice of our big-business brethren.

Don't mourn, organize ...

How strange. I actually went to CAIR site to see the PSAs, and it shut down my computer. I actually had to reboot!

The only PSA I am interested in is the one that tells me where they live in my town so I can keep an eye on them.

Why don't they just show Muslims in an accurate light, killing innocent people and/or blaming Jews for every single problem they have.

24 is about terrorism. Is it wrong to portray terrorists (muslims) as they are? Last season the terrorists were mexican drug lords, were there PSAs that told people that not all mexican drug lords are terrorists? Of course not. Most mexican drug lords are decent, hard working people that need to be loved, just like murderers, rapists, and schizophrenic homeless that throw bricks at passersby.
