Neat picture.
I always find these kind of stories of great interest. The deductions and measurements and extrapolations and all that stuff read like a good Sherlock Holmes story. Real scientists doing real science is a lot of fun to read about.

I also love reading about real scientists doing real science. Does anyone have any good book recommendations?

"Does anyone have any good book recommendations?" I can direct you to some excellent anthropology/archaeology books...if you're interested in this area.

Very cool.

I suppose you have star charts that are more up-to-date.

Thanks Blam. It could be that other such statues were made, even commonplace, various sizes, etc, but quite a lot of ancient Roman-era sculpture wound up getting rendered into lime (fired) during the middle ages, for use as mortar and the like. Please FREEPMAIL me if you want on, off, or alter the "Gods, Graves, Glyphs" PING list --

Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh is excellent if your tastes run to mathematics.
Longitude The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel is also excellent.
