Neat picture.

I always find these kind of stories of great interest. The deductions and measurements and extrapolations and all that stuff read like a good Sherlock Holmes story. Real scientists doing real science is a lot of fun to read about.

I also love reading about real scientists doing real science. Does anyone have any good book recommendations?

"Does anyone have any good book recommendations?"

I can direct you to some excellent anthropology/archaeology books...if you're interested in this area.

"...perhaps the best part of the discovery is "simply that we have recovered one of the most famous known examples of lost ancient wisdom."
Very cool.

I suppose you have star charts that are more up-to-date.

Thanks Blam. It could be that other such statues were made, even commonplace, various sizes, etc, but quite a lot of ancient Roman-era sculpture wound up getting rendered into lime (fired) during the middle ages, for use as mortar and the like.

Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh is excellent if your tastes run to mathematics.

Longitude The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel is also excellent.

An ancient mystery may have been solved by LSU Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Bradley E. Schaefer.

Well, that sure beats that 'depth PhD ' a few hours ago....
