New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner gave a Tampa high school marching band the financial boost it needed to get to the presidential inaugural parade next week, donating $37,000 to help with travel expenses.
Steinbrenner, who lives in Tampa, on Thursday offered the Gaither High School band the difference between what students and parents had raised and the estimated $90,000 they needed for the trip to Washington.
"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh," excited band booster vice president Becky Myers said after hearing the news.
Students have struggled to raise the money since learning last month they will be the lone Florida representatives in Thursday's parade. Families were going to have to pitch in more to make up the rest without the contribution, Myers said.
The band has five charter buses taking 165 student performers and instruments, as well as 70 chaperons.
"Mr. Steinbrenner just wanted to make sure these kids had an opportunity of a lifetime," said Howard Grosswirth, vice president of marketing for the Yankees.

165 teens <> 70 chaperones....that's 2.3 kids per chaperone!
IMO, Sounds like a lot of freeloaders going on this trip!
More reasonable would be 25 chaperones <> 6.6 students each!
Have to admit, tho...the trip is a bargain...$385 per person!

First, Steinbrenner gives $1M to tsunami relief organizations, and decides that the Yankees do have a salary limit (even if it's over $200) and now this. Weird. Still Fay Vincent should have not un-banned him for hiring a mobster to dig up dirt on HOFer Dave Winfield because Steinbrenner didn't want to give money to Dave's charitable organization, as was agreed to in his contract.
