Thanks for the"warning"but I definitely WILL see "Baby".Why?Oh,just call me the rebellious type who hates PC whether it comes from the right or the left.
I will use my OWN critical faculties to make my OWN judgements.Conservatives ranted so much about Fahrenheit 9-11 that I went to see it BECAUSE it stirred up such a storm.Otherwise,I would have skipped it completely.BTW,I found it blatantly manipulative and biased but I wanted to see for myself.
Same with when the liberals made big stinks about movies like Passion of the Christ,Birth of a Nation or Death Wish.Hell,how dare they try to tell me these movies are "bad"for me?I have a mind of my own and am no one's blind robot.

I trust Eastwood and, if anything, I think his politics are a little right of center and so I will see the film.
From what I've read, the only element of the story that causes me a bit of concern is the depiction of Swank as having an almost stereotypical trailer trash background. Apparently, Swank's parents are right out of the movie Deliverance - but without the banjo's.
This was probably Eastwood's way of showing what motivated Swank in her attempt at a boxing career, but I'm afraid it may also have appealed to the liberal film critics sneering prejudices about red state residents and prompted them to give it such rave reviews.
We shall see.

My wife and I saw it last night. We didn't think it supported anything.

It is a strong drama, about a difficult question. In the movie, the act was done.

The movie didn't say that it was the "right" thing.

If anybody has any doubts that $MM Baby was nothing more than propaganda, consider the character of the priest. This movie supposedly about the nitty gritty of boxing, and the only profanity uttered came from a priest? GEE! I wonder what Hollywood was trying to tell us? Think about it, the only reason that priest was there was to showcase the hollowness of the Church's position on euthanasia. To hammer it home, the casting director chose an actor for the roll who could pass for PeeWee Herman's twin.

Why can’t Warner Brothers—“Baby’s” distributor—say what the movie’s really about, glorifying euthanasia?

Because it wasn't?

I saw the movie yesterday and while I thought that it was very good, I wouldn't say it was the best movie I've seen this year. Take three actors the caliber of Eastwood, Freeman, and Swank, add a director like Eastwood, and a decent story line and you can't help but have a good movie. Does that make it worthy of the Oscar? I don't think so. I went in expecting to see a good movie, and I came out knowing I had seen a good movie. No surprise. A couple of weeks ago I went to see "Finding Neverland" not expecting a whole lot, and I walked out of there knowing that I had just seen the best movie I saw all year. Total surprise, wonderful cast, unbelievable acting on the part of Depp and the younger boy actor. I think that's what makes an Oscar winning movie, one that exceeds your expectations. "Million Dollar Baby" just didn't accomplish that.

I am going to disagree with a lot this. I haven't seen this movie but this theme isn't new and was certainly covered in the TV show "Dallas" some years ago.
In the show Ray Krebbs nephew Mickey is in a car accident and is a quadriplegic and begs Ray to pull the plug on him which he does and then Ray is tried for murder, etc..
So this is nothing new and it's a stretch to say this film is advocating euthanasia or assisted suicide.
Would any of us really want to continue in a useless existence like that or want a loved to if they didn't want to. Tough questions and no easy answers and every case is different. Some people would want to live and others not.
I suppose that may be the idea in the film to stimulate debate and ask tough questions but it doesn't offer any easy answers.
So to single this film out and invite or infer an agenda or suggestions it has hidden meanings might be stretching it quite a bit.
There are other films that have dealt with this issue, one other film that comes to mind is "Whose Life Is It Anyway?", a 1981 movie with Richard Dreyfess that deals with this issue head on and I certainly don't remember anyone picking up on this film and accusing it of supporting assisted suicide although that was the theme running through it.
Anyone else think of any other films or TV movies or shows that dealt with this issue over the years.

Euthanasia has always been the flip side of abortion. Terminate the useless aged, disabled, and medically incurable. After all to use the Left's favorite line of reasoning, its for the common good. And there's the jibe against trailer park trash - a code word for Flyover Country rednecks. You have the Left's ideal of an America filled with Beautiful People, the young, the healthy, and those with glamorous looks. And who are naturally all for abortion, euthanasia and look to the state for all their needs. Save your money on Million Dollar Baby. To put Debbie Schlussel's critique in more pointed terms, this is one movie that ain't worth a box-fighters (never mind a box-office) prize.

I saw the trailer about a month ago at the theatre, and it didn't go into the euthanasia part at all. The movie itself looked like a cookie cutter version of a woman in a man's sport anyway.

goldstategop, why do you keep including that quote from "Denny Crane" in every one of your posts? First off, it's not even remotely clever or profound. Second, the place to put that is in your tagline, where it belongs.
