Nuf Said!
The 60's were really innocent compared with today. Such cool band names back then like jefferson Airplane, Strawberry Alarm Clock etc.
Today everyhing end in Z Boyz to men ad nasum etc etc
"Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Country Joe and the Fish."
What a blast from the past. I remember all of them.
(i'm gettin old)
Bathing at Baxters was my favorite as well.
I'm glad he's at rest and so sad to hear of all of his troubles.
I know...I'm older now, but the music today does nothing for me. I'm a fading picture it seems. It's OK...I think I'll go listen to Pillow now, followed up by a heavy dose of CREAM."
What you said, I couldn't agree more....
"Young Girl Sunday Blues.."
The feedback Jorma does in Spare Chaynge is incredible...
If I was on a desert Island, that would be one of the albums I require.
(Of course, I'd need my Polk SDS-SRS's along too)
"Surrealistic Pillow" was the first rock album I ever bought. I guess that dates me.
How about "Bless Its Pointed Little Head." And Moby Grape was cool -- "8:05" and "Omaha." Another SF group from that era was Crabby Appleton. Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil ping.
QMS.
john cippolina(sp) was brilliant. incredible signiture vibroto laden guitar work. (also see terry and the pirates)
the airplane were a tremendous group. vocal harmonies and innovative guitar interplay. for some raw early san fran psychadelia check out the great society. early grace slick.
the original version of somebody to love is incredibaly hypnotic. do not drive while playing this. you may get a speeding ticket.
moby grape were ok. skip spence's solo OAR lp was weak but very collectable.
P.S. PSYCHADELISIZE SUBURBIA!
Remember: "feed your head."
nail on the head, spot on!
The summer had inhaled
And held its breath too long
The winter looked the same
As if it never had gone
And through an open window
Where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you
Comin' back to me
One begins to read between
The pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music
And suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees
The kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you
Comin' back to me
You came to stay and live my way
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind
You always say you won't go away
But I know what it always has been
It always has been
A transparent dream
Beneath an occasional sigh
Most of the time
I just let it go by
Now I wish it hadn't begun
I saw you, yes, I saw you
Comin' back to me
Strolling the hills
Overlooking the shore
I realize I've been here before
The shadow in the mist
Could have been anyone
I saw you, I saw you
Comin' back to me
Small things like reasons
Are put in a jar
Whatever happened to wishes
Wished on a star?
Was it just something
That I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you
Comin' back to me
i thought crabby appleton was a midwest band?
i need mighty manfred, tom terrific or WEEGEE
for verification :-D
Airplane released a special 3 disc set that I used to have, which was actually stolen. Lotta great stuff, including live version of "Coming Back to Me". Balin had one of the smoothest voices ever recorded.
Late 60's stoned Metaphysics:
"No Man is an Island!
no man is an Island..."
"He's a peninsula!!!!"
Very first vinyl I ever owned:
The Worst of the Jefferson Airplane
Same here.
RIP, Spencer.
Yoicks! Another FReeper who has actually heard of Crabby Appleton! "Go Back" is one of my all-time top ten - what a great song. Never could figure out why they never had another hit. I have a videotape of '60's garage bands that has some cheesy tv show hosted by John Byner that has Crabby on the beach, playing "Go Back". Ahhh, memories of a wasted youth...
I used to love the Jefferson Airplane, too, particularly the Miracles albumn.
