NEW YORK -- Records of more than 3,000 World War II-era Swiss bank accounts were published on the Internet Thursday as part of an effort to return hundreds of millions of dollars to Nazi victims or their descendants.
The publication was the result of a settlement reached in June between the banks and Nazi victims. The banks' refusal to release the records had angered Holocaust survivors and infuriated a federal judge overseeing the case.
Lawyers in the case said in June that Credit Suisse and UBS AG would publish the names of accounts opened during the Nazi era. Nazi-era accounts for comparison with a list of thousands hoping to recover family assets from Swiss banks.
The list of names was posted to the Web site of the tribunal overseeing the distribution of the funds _ www.crt-ii.org. The agreement is intended to resolve much of the outstanding contention between the banks and Holocaust survivors, who agreed to a $1.25 billion settlement of their lawsuit in 1998.

The Swiss act all high and mighty about their neutrality. It's never impressed me. Being "neutral" in a battle of good vs. evil is not a good thing -- it's a place for cowards and losers.

Precisely. The U.N. would feel completely at home in Switzerland ... and Americans would sigh a breath of relief. Especially neo-cons like me ... ;)
WEll, it is not new. The Swiss have done this kind of deal for ages. THis is how they keep the money that is put there. The holocaust money is a great particular injustice amongst many others involving much much bigger amounts.
The Swiss are not so neutral indeed. THey require all kinds of paperwork in order to prove that one can have access to an ancestor's money, notwistanding the requirement of the actual wills and laws of the nations from where the ancestors resided. In other words, no paper work, no money back, they keep it.
However I have heard that swiss bankers married to diplomats from abroad make it very easy for their heirs, such as Arafat's, for getting back their booty, paperwork or not.
