[Randy] Moss to be fined [$10K] for celebration
ESPN Online ^ | 1/13/05

Randy Moss has been told he will be fined $10,000 for his end-zone celebration, a Vikings source told ESPN's Chris Mortenson on Thursday.

NFL officials would not confirm or deny the report.

Moss caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of the Vikings' 31-17 win over the Packers on Sunday and headed toward the goalpost. He then turned his back to the Lambeau Field crowd, bent over and pantomimed pulling down his pants.

Moss didn't practice with the Vikings on Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle, but he's listed as probable for Sunday's playoff game at Philadelphia.

Sunday night, an NFL spokesman told ESPN's Chris Mortensen: "Randy Moss can expect to be hearing from us."

Now I'm not going to go and defend Randy Moss on all this but lost in all these reports about this terrible human tragedy was a statement I saw made by the Colts coach Tony Dungy when asked his impressions of Moss and the "celebration". Dungy said that he thought it was intended as a humourous slap at the wonderful Packer fans who, after Packer victories, regularly line up behind a chain-link fence near the visiting team bus and drop their pants to moon the opposing team as they exit the stadium.

Coach Dungy said he has seen the Packer fans do it personally on a number of occasions and assumed that Moss and the Vikings have also been mooned on their past walks of shame and in a moment of glory, Moss was returning the favor.

So what gives? Who's filtering your news?....

No, the Prez didn't say it - Paul Harvey was just joking - but I think it would be the perfect job for Moss, and just the level of respect the French deserve.

I think his moon thingy was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. I have seen worse.

Maybe the Cheeseheads had it coing, but he could have waited until after the game when the camera and national audience wasn't looking.

It's okay, don't worry, I wasn't psychologically devastated by seeing it.

"...even Bill Cosby has gotten raked over the coals for speaking such truths."

Yes, and unfortunately it goes beyond football or skin color... Among other things, it's called Accountability - and many today don't want any part of it. - and for reasons obvious to many of us as well.

I don't think it was the "moon", rather "the a$$ wipe on the goal post" that caused the uproar, and hence the fine. If he just did the "moon" he probably would have been ignored.

I never thought I would see a funnier hair style than Don King's, but Moss managed to do it.

This may interest you.

From Sid Hartman's column in the Minneapolis Star Tribune: It is a letter sent to Moss by someone at St. Joseph's Home for Children, a Minneapolis charity to which Moss has been a great benefactor.

It was titled "That Is Who You Are," and read:

"Lately you have been analyzed, criticized and demonized by people who haven't got a clue about the real you. I do not understand it.

"With people dying daily in Iraq and whole families lost due to the recent tsunami, there are more important things to talk about than two seconds at the end of a football game or some harmless fun in the end zone.

"Sport analysts and your critics need to get a grip and lose their sense of righteous indignation. Many of them do not speak from perfection, balance or fairness. They should be thanking you for giving them the gift of something to talk about. And while talking about and writing about you makes for great radio, great television ratings and newspaper profit, trashing you doesn't feed a homeless family or comfort a frightened child.

"You know how to do this. You are making a positive difference in the lives of others. You do not take credit or publicize your charitable efforts. Never forget, Randy, that your private kindness to others is the measure of who you really are. Always remember your family, team, those you care about, your own personal belief in you, and in a higher power, are the elements of life that are the most important.

"I hope that you will continue to stay true to you and you will keep on 'keeping it real.'

"Continue to love the game and your team. Play with passion. Pound the Eagles and please know that there are thousands of us who support you."

This bozo would be in jail for psychological nudity if he wasn't an excellent football player (in some peoples estimation).

A $10,000 fine is chump change to big dogs like this who can play in the street while the rest of us less talented nobodys have to stay on the sidewalk!

"(mooning)Maybe Moss experienced this "

No maybes about it, this is typical Packer fan behavior and was confirmed by Tony Dungy who used to be a defensive coordinator with the Vikings. This has gone on for years.

Bad behavior should never be tolerated regardless of the person's skin color. There is white trash, brown trash, black trash, and yellow trash, but they are all still trash, and the condoning of poor behavior has a corrosive effect on any community.

"I think he is hilarious."

Me too! I'm glad he threw it back into those redneck Packer fans, who'd been screaming "Buckwheat", "P**sy", and "B*tch" at him all game. It's not like he actually dropped trou and mooned them. No skin was exposed.

The Fox guys (Bradshaw in particular) were just going off on how 'disgraceful' and 'embarrassing' it was. You know what was disgraceful and embarrassing? Brett Favre's horrid 4-INT performance and the GB secondary getting torched TWICE by an injured Moss.

Bradshaw was just heartbroken that he didn't get to suck up to Favre for another week.

Roll it up, Daunte!

"The fans deserved what he gave em."

Exactly. It's not like he ran into the crowd and beat up anyone.

Paul Harvey made an interesting comment the other day: President Bush has nominated Randy Moss to be Ambassador to France! I love it!

Years ago I watched Bennie Thompson, a special teams specialist, make a tackle while playing for the Chiefs. He then preceeded to crawl on all fours like a dog and then simulate the action that a dog takes to relieve themself on a fire hydrant.

This thing with Moss was harmless.

I heard this too, but that is the behavior of fans. Players are supposed to be professional athletes and role models (whether they like it or not) for youth. Talent can only make up for some lack of class. IMO Moss should have been fined $1M for that little stunt. He's an arrogant jackass.
