[Israeli] Policeman sentenced for abuse

The Jerusalem District Court sentenced an Israeli border police officer to 14 months in jail Thursday for abusing a Palestinian man together with four of his comrades just outside the city four months ago.

The border police officer, Nir Levy, 24, detained the Palestinian on suspicion of working in Israel without a permit on September 11, and then, together with his four partners, took him to an abandoned building in the West Bank village of Abu Dis, where they beat him, burnt cigarette stubs on his hands, made him jump out of a second floor window and drink their urine.

The five border policemen were arrested in September, after the Palestinian complained to police.

As part of a plea bargain, Levy confessed to the crimes against him, and was convicted on charges of aggravated assault and abuse.

A defense attorney had called the extreme abuse case "a one-time outburst of anger, frustration, and exhaustion," which followed the death and injury of relatives and comrades in various Palestinian terror attacks.

But in handing down the sentencing, Judge Haim Li-Ran rejected such an appeal for leniency, calling the actions "dreadful deeds that descend to the lowest levels of interpersonal behavior."

The trial of the four other policemen involved in the incident is still underway, a justice ministry spokeswoman said Thursday.

The four are not cooperating with the prosecution.

These border police thought they had a "ticking bomb"

They should have called in the Mossad professionals immediately instead of taking matters into their own hands.

The point, I think, is that Israel will imprison someone for abusing a Palestinian. What do the Palestinians do to someone who abuses or kills an Israeli?
