You may want to take a look at Pope John Paul II's Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of LIFE) from 1995.

The Pope's Statement. While the vast majority of U.S. Catholics support capital punishment, Pope John Paul II has declared the Church's near total opposition to the death penalty. ... Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), an encyclical letter on various threats to human life which Pope John Paul II issued on March 25, 1995 ...

Near total opposition! Get it? You are wrong!

"That sounds like a pretty strong condemnation of captial punishment to me. But then again, I'm just a lowly Catholic who doesn't have the bible memorized chapter and verse."

I don't know how lowly you are (LOL!) but this particular passage has been debated for generations. My particular church sees this an example of Christ's superior moral sense and ability to see through a pretty devastating trap. The Pharisees wanted Christ to repudiate the death penalty for adultery which would have made Him a heretic at the very least. He did not condemn the law (for which he had the perfect opportunity) but He used compassion to save the woman.

If Christ had wanted to condemn the death penalty, there were numerous instances where this could have done. And I'll bet that the woman really did change her ways as Christ commanded her to do which is more than you can expect from most criminals.

And didn't Jesus respond that "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her"?

Capital Punishment isn't the same as Vigilante Punshment. Also, note that He didn't say they must not, He simply urged them to consider their own condition.

Quite to the contrary if Jesus were with us today he would be on the front lines of protests AGAINST the death penalty.

Assuming that you know the will of God is the height of hubristic arrogance, leftist troll.

How does one debate your opinion? Why should anyone care what you think or try to change it. This is not the UN, home of meaningless and endless debate. If you don't like it here, go away. I'll hold the door for your whiney butt!

I couldn't see when this article originally appeared. Not today since the NYT book review of books comes out on Sunday.

Clearly it is strongly slanted to make Bush look like pure evil. I wish I had access to the facts; Bush says he could not override the pardons and parole board and I think that is true but the writer seems to think he could have if he wanted to.

Of course it is also aimed at Gonzales. The article makes them seem perfectly bloodthirsty.

I know that Texas governor in the '30's, 'Ma" Ferguson, was actually selling pardons. If a prisoner could raise about $10,000 she'd write him a pardon.

After that no Texas governor was allowed to control pardons, it went to the pardons and parole board.

This article (or book review) seems to imply Bush did have that power. I don't think he did.

I never said they totally oppose it, the Catholic Church is a large institution there are priests and nuns who are pro-choice I'm sure, and gasp! have homosexual friends. Irregardless PJP IIs message is that the reasons brought forth in certain passages of the bible in defense of the Death Penalty are, in this day and age, obsolete. I do need to work now, unfortunately I couldn't get to everybody's response which I know makes me a coward/fool/ignorant/whiny/commie etc. etc. I appreciate those who offered their views without personal attacks or cat pictures. This proved to be an interesting experiment and proved something I thought all along...just like the whiny whimpering liberals y'all like to sit around and circle jerk and whenever posed with a question resort to assault and stereotypes for every commie/coward label there's a redneck one waiting on the left all in all an exercise in futility. So it appears I have still yet to be banned..which is funny dissenting views get blocked...but anyways I will be back somewhere perhaps in this form or another...but hopefully your genocidal dreams will fail to come true or you may find yourself on the wrong end of a dirty bomb. How's that for self-assurance. Continue regular masturbatory activity.

Karla Faye's death hit me hard.

While I'm sure the death/murder (excuse me, "unfortunate demise") of the two people she murdered with an axe hit her rather softly.

The bitch deserved to die and she did.

No, that is a condemnation of hypocritical condemnation without due process.
