A group of billionaire philanthropists are to donate tens of millions more dollars to delevelop progressive political ideas in the US to counter the conservative ascdenancy.
George Soros, who made his fortune in the hedge fund industry, Herb and Marion Sandler, the California couple who own a multi billion dollar savings and loan business, and Peter Lewis the chairman of an Ohio insurance company, donated more than $63 million dollars in the 2004 election cycle to organizations seeking to defeat President George W. Bush.
At a meeting in San Francisco last month, the left leaning billionaires agreed to commit an even larger sum over a longer period to build institutions that foster progressive ideas and people.
Far from being disillusioned by the defeat of Sen. John Kerry, the billionaires have resolved to invest further in the intellectual future of the left.
Their committment to provide new money comes amid criticism of the efforts of high profile donors such as Mr. Soros to sway US politics.
The intention is to provide the left with organizations in Washington that match the heft of right wing think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute. At a state level, the aim is to build a 'deeper progressive bench.'

Hey, we're going to have some real fun with the "progressive" United Nations Socialists soon :) A new contest is coming out that will show how a hundred and fifty bucks can neutralize Soros millions. And how we can completely undermine the left. The millions will be required just to SLOW the collapse, not to prevent it.

Under the aegis of a Foundation, Soros, Lewis and Bing (and their co-conspirators) could get away with huge financial travesties. Within that structure all kinds of financial misdeeds can be hidden. Corporate monies illegally could be laundered, used to fund campaigns to evade the FEC, and transfer corporate assets to personal accounts to evade the SEC, and state and federal banking laws.
For example, it would be interesting to know what kind of financial activities, Soros, Lewis and Bing, and officers of publicly-traded corporations will be engaged in and whether company donations to Soros, Lewis and Bing, will be properly accounted for on company financial statements, whether shareholders will be duly notified of corporate donations, whether the donations might be illegally made from corporate funds in the names of private individuals, and whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators, properly account for these donations when filing official statements.
If Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators, rig federal and state funding statements in collusion with officers of publicly-held companies who filed false financial instruments, that would be considered aiding and abetting the commission of federal and state crimes.
Employing fraudulent accounting practices in order to cover-up corporate wrongdoing would jeopardize the financial interests of stockholders, corporate associates and partners, which would compel the SEC to step in.
If these characters resort to cooking the books or use accounting procedures in order to fool shareholders.... .......like misusing corporate reserve accounts, concealing losses, inflating asset values, improperly accounting for transactions, deferring losses into reserve accounts, improperly shifting capital
funding.....stuff like that
..the SEC would be compelled to step in.
Shareholders should contact the SEC here enforcement@SEC.gov
Furthermore, as part of the Tax Exempt Compensation Enforcement Project, the IRS intends to examine non-profit organizations (NPO), to learn more about the practices nonprofits follow as they fill out Form 990, the main public disclosure documents for charities and foundations, and whether accounting fraud and tax evasion is taking place, and whether the compensation of specific individuals is excessive and, and whether instances of questionable compensation practices may evade IRS, banking and SEC laws.
The IRS will examine NPO insider transactions, such as (1) loans, the (2) sale, (3) exchange or (4) leasing of property to non-profit officers and others. In particular, the IRS will look to see how organizations report (5) "excess benefit transactions" on Form 990, and (6) executive pay.
The IRS could determine whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators----through the Foundation----are properly accounting for all of its activities including tax-funded activities, whether they are inflating legal costs, and whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators are using foundation dollars for the purposes stated.
Form 990, the main public disclosure documents for NPO's, including charities and foundations, could determine whether accounting fraud and tax evasion is taking place, and whether the compensation of specific individuals is excessive in order to transfer assets, and, and whether instances of questionable compensation practices may evade the IRS, and US banking laws.
We need to know whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators might be engaged in Enron-style accounting and spending practices using tax dollars for personal expenses, for example, and whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators might cook the books.
According to August 2004 news reports the IRS is in the process now and will continue examining NPO's. The IRS began the new enforcement project at the end of July and will continue through 2005. The IRS has received complaints that 501C's are being used to run just about every kind of off-the-books accounting fraud.
The IRS should be alert to determining whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators, are properly accounting for all foundation expenditures, whether it is fraudulently inflating legal costs, and whether it is using foundaiton dollars for the purposes stated. We need to know whether Soros, Lewis and Bing, and their co-conspirators are engaged in Enron-style accounting and spending practices.
How much are these people giving to tsunami relief ?
Liz said it better in post 42 than I did in post 24.
There are piles and piles of money sitting around somewhere...
These 501Cs and the 527 are highly interesting. You might check out my vanity (today's) on some things I've been googling--in a very disorganized manner, but have had some lucky breaks...
"intellectual future of the left"
Is this the oxymoron of the year?
Hey Liz,
I was trying to look something up.
From Soro's bio:
"In 1956 Soros moved to the United States, where he began to accumulate a large fortune through an international investment fund he founded and managed."
Do you have any idea what investment fund he started in '56?
I see this as great news. They are going to spend many millions of dollars instead of letting them sit in a bank account (probably overseas). This will spur further growth in our economy and the republicans will get the credit for the growth...I love it when leftists play into the hands of the right.
Yeah, but is this money actually being spent? Did they spend the money from Moveon.org, America Coming Together, etc.? Is it just sitting somewhere?
Nonprofits, authorities, trust, foundations, and unions, have the potential and may, in fact, be major money laundering conduits. They wrap themselves in all sorts of high-sounding causes while engaging in activities that are fraudulent, and benefit insiders at the expense of law-abiding Americans.
As part of the Tax Exempt Compensation Enforcement Project, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced August 2004 that it intends to examine non-profit organizations (NPO's), to learn more about the practices nonprofits follow as they fill out Form 990, the main public disclosure documents for charities and foundations, and whether accounting fraud and tax evasion is taking place, and whether the compensation of specific individuals is excessive and, and whether instances of questionable compensation practices may evade IRS, banking and SEC laws.
News agencies reported the IRS statement Aug 10, 2004, and that some 2,000 charities will be reviewed under a new IRS enforcement effort to determine whether NPO's are abusing their tax-exempt status. "We are concerned that some charities and private foundations are abusing their tax-exempt status by paying exorbitant compensation to their officers and others," said IRS Commissioner Mark Everson.
The IRS began the new enforcement project at the end of July 2004 and will continue through 2005.
The IRS has received complaints that 501C's are being used to run just about every kind of off-the-books accounting fraud.
In one case, the president of a non-profit organization was embezzling donations and was engaging in accounting fraud by having the NPO pay his entire apartment lease which was fraudulently booked on non-profit documents as a "business office." When the incident was reported to the IRS, they agreed that documentation to prove the fraud existed, but that the IRS had the staff to investigate non-profit fraud solely in amounts totaling $100,000 or more. The only way the fraud could have been stopped was to hire private attorneys to take the individual to court for fraud against the non-profit. However, the non-profit board walked away from it because they didn't have the personal resources to stop the fraud.
Concerns have also been raised that the IRS has been stymied in its efforts to penalize falsified tax documents and official financial instruments to cover-up theft, and the failure of individuals to report stolen money as income.
Legal fees, a line item in most non-profit accounting reports, are well-used money laundering schemes that evade US taxes, and use fraudulent accounting techniques to violate US banking, SEC, and perhape FEC laws.

THANK YOU!
>>>>Appreciates the value of freedom more than most. During World War I, his father was captured by the Russians but managed to escape. Then during World War II, his family hid from the Nazis after Hungary allied itself with Germany. Came to U.S. in 1956 with economics degree in hand. In 1969, started Quantum Fund with James Rogers, who broke with him in 1981. Today, as a 70% owner of $2.1 billion Quantum, the worlds largest offshore investment fund, Soros and the other six managing directors split 15% of the annual profits. He spends most of his time in his home in England and helping fellow Hungarians and other Eastern Europeans reacquaint themselves with capitalism. To bankroll that effort, he created the Open Society Fund in 1979 and the Soros Foundation-Hungary in 1984. Known as "an alternate ministry of culture," the foundation helped establish a management training center in an old castle outside Budapest. Now there are foundations in 10 Central and Eastern European countries aimed at cultural and economic revitalization. Soros, 59, is the author of The Alchemy of Finance, published in 1987, in which he outlines, somewhat circuitously, his "theory of reflexivity," which holds that perceptions change events which in turn, change perceptions. This is not his first attempt at writing. Soros did extensive work several years earlier on a philosophical book that was never completed. His new book, Opening the Soviet System, is due out this month.<<<<<

I don't think Soros has any respect for the law, so alerting the authorities of his potential shenanigans is a good idea.
I don't know why,but he certainly has a penchant for throwing piles of money down the drain on lost causes.
No no. Not down the drain. It is a revolving door.
Example.
He donated to an election.
That election has to spend x amount of dollars on media.
The only media forms choosen are ones he has his financial connections with.
Money comes back that way.
It is more complicated than that...but that is the idea in a nutshell.
And with more forms than media.
You read my mind..I'm serious too
Soros has handed his hedge fund over to his sons And has divested himself of ALL interests in third world nation companies. He went long in oil, when it tanked. To buy the oil options,he sold something I forget right now,but what he sold MADE MONEY after he sold it. Soros has billions, but lately, every single thing he's touched/poured money into, has turned to ashes...not that that has made him "poor" by any means.
Thanks much for all the information. It would be great to nail them in the same way we nailed Al Capone. Through the tax code!!
