Report Reaction

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
Report Reaction
CBS News Anchor Dan Rather (search) says he has read yesterday's report on CBS' now-discredited Bush National Guard story and "My strongest reaction is one of sadness and concern for those [four] individuals" who lost their jobs. In a statement to CBS employees, Rather says, "It would be a shame if we let this matter, troubling as it is, obscure their dedication and good work over the years." But, he says,

Credit Where Credit Is Due
Speaking of the CBS story, contributors to the Web site FreeRepublic.com (search) are pointing out that they actually sounded the earliest warnings that something was fishy about the story ... minutes after it aired. Correction coming?

USA Today (search) is weighing in with disappointment over CBS' conduct, saying in an editorial today, "Journalism, by its nature, puts two priorities at odds: The need to get a story to readers as soon as possible, and the [greater] need to get that story right. ... CBS News ... reversed those priorities." But USA Today never says in its editorial or even in its front-page story on the CBS report that it also went with the story, based on the same memos. USA Today has yet to issue a retraction or a correction for its own reporting, though it did cover the controversy over the CBS report in its news pages.

One main theme of CBS was that Bush got preferential treatment even to be admitted to the Guard to avoid active duty in Viet Nam.

Did they ever even ask how Kerry got into the Naval Reserve? That's where he enlisted. He went to active duty later. The Navy, itself, was considered fairly safe at the time since North Viet Nam didn't have a navy. I have to think that the Navy Reserve was just as hard to get into as the TANG.

USA Today has been getting a free ride in this Rathergate story.

They also ran with it with 6 memos, not 4, and they know who the source of the forgeries is, since they got them from the same person. They are why CBS was in a race to be first with the forgeries. Put the pressure on them, too, to reveal the source of the forgeries.

They have not only not apologized for using forged documents, but the reporters covering the story, Jim Drinkard and Dave Moniz, like Mary Mapes, have an anti-Bush agenda going back to 2000.

USA Today is clever in laying low on this because they face similar threats of prosecution if the knowingly published forged government documents.

Let's not give CBS all the credit for bias and criminality.

Not sure of NY Times involvement. I don't think they received the forged documents, only CBS and USA Today did.

Sorry about the double post. My finger stuttered.

I think the one person that could resurrect cBS as a respected news agancy is Brit Hume. Just as well, I don't think he'd leave Fox.

Do we need to snip from Fox News?

Anyway, everyone should go take a look, because Brit also mentions that somebody with the initials S.B. who walked off with classified documents stuffed down his pants and in his socks is going to the grand jury.

"Oh, rats! I was going to post this when it was posted on the website! I was so pumped that Brit mentioned Free Republic, and you stole my thunder. :)"

This was the longest post it ever took me. I have no idea what is wrong with my computer at work but the cut & paste is inoperable.
I hate to post and not respond but typing this thing out (After multiple attempts the conventional way) ran out my lunch time!

BTW, welcome to FR.

"Why does this fossil still have a job?"

Maybe they are hoping he will turn into oil so they can get their investment back?

I tried to post the entire article and it came back as only excerpts allowed.
Sigh....

Hey! Maybe we can make Brit an "honorary" member of the Pajama Patrol, and send him one of the badges.
