Aslyum seeker wanted to crash plane (part of "the struggle against the USA and Norway")

In 2003 an asylum seeker was prepared to carry out a suicide mission on a domestic Norwegian flight.

This Kato Air flight nearly ended in disaster when an asylum seeker invaded the cockpit swinging an axe.

Police revealed the man's intentions. When they intervened, the refugee's bags were packed and plans were found, along with a farewell note to his family.

The PST (Norwegian Police Security Service) believe the man was capable of taking down a commuter plane in the northern Norway network. In the autumn of 2004 a Kato Air flight in Bodø narrowly avoided a crash after an asylum seeker entered the cockpit of such a plane and attacked the pilots with an axe.

PST chief Jørn Holme confirmed the 2003 arrest to Aftenposten, an incident that had been classified.

Security checks on these small commuter flights only began on the first of this year.

Holme said that the man had equipped himself to bring down a plan. Holme would not elaborate for security reasons, but said that explosives were not involved.

The refugee had been overheard talking about blowing up a plane by another asylum seeker, and authorities were notified.

In the man's suicide note to his family police said that the act was planned as part of "the struggle against the USA and Norway".

Upon his arrest the man was considered psychotic and put under constant medical attention, rather than going through criminal process. He was later sent out of the country under close guard.

Was it really an axe, or was it the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush?

Axe-wielding passengers wouldn't be a problem if the Norwegian airlines hired dead people to be pilots like their merchant marine does.

I'm curious too: How did Norway of all places get dragged into this?

It looks like the guy was a few fries short of a happy meal. It probably made sense in his deranged mind somehow though.

Leif Erickson and his Vikings raped, pillaged, and displaced the Muslims who originally discovered North America a thousand years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue..

Bin Laden's deputy Dr. Ayman al-Zawihiri singled us out as a terrorist target in 2003 along with the US, Britain and Australia. Apparently we'd killed some kin of his in Afghanistan.

Dear Doc, we're so sorry. NOT.

My guess: Norway sells most(if not all) of it's very large reserves of oil to the USA. So therefore it's a minion of the great Satan.

Norway participated in Afghanistan...(and, I believe rejected the asylum claims of this particular fellow)

For a while, Norway also had soldiers in Iraq.

So, is Norway still on the side of "right"? I am compiling an informal list of countries that still support us around the world, so I know where to spend my vacation dollars. So far, in Europe, I have Italy and Poland as confirmed. It would be nice to add one or more of the scandinavian countries as well. Despite their heavily socialist governments they are still beautiful places.

Just another "generic" asylum seeker? Who is He? Where is He from? Any bets on this? Looks like the European Press has become so PC bound as to make all relevance, irrelevant. Bunch of nutless, gutless, Euroweenies!
If I have the wrong take on this, excuse Me. I just have this old fashion habit of giving offense where offense is due. The evidence is often in the details, looks like that is not to be expected these days.
I'll bet a jug of decent sour mash the axe man isn't Southern Baptist!

Heck, I read this story a tad to fast. I thought this story only revealed new information about the axe man, but is is actually about another would-be terrorist/asylum seeker.

The Axe-man incident took place last year, but this other previously classified incident took place in 2003.

BTW. The axeman that nearly brought down a place last year is from Algeria. He lifelong dream was to become an imam. Perhaps he was just doing some extra curricular activities to gain credits towards his "religious" studies.

You can safely add Denmark to your list.

I am not sure about Norway. Government is ok. The population is not. Put it on maybe :-)

Do we support you? Basically, yes. We did not endorse a war on Iraq without an explicit UN mandate, but lent you equipment (range finders and laser searchers) for the war on request. We later dispatched elite engineering troops to Basra to help the reconstruction. Apart from the disagreement on Iraq we are as loyal an ally as could be wished for.

Wait a minute:

"Upon his arrest the man was considered psychotic and put under constant medical attention, rather than going through criminal process. He was later sent out of the country under close guard."

Where was he sent? This seems to imply he was just deported and is now walking around loose.
