For all us Windows fans who felt Macs were just too pricey, now there is good news. Apple has released the "mini Mac" for $499.
While the $499 model doesn't come with a keyboard or mouse, standard USB keyboards and mice (including two button wheel mice) will work with the unit.
See http://www.apple.com/macmini/ for more details.
A Microsoft shill would buy one, except that he's gay.
WOW!!!
A $499 doorstop.. I'm impressed.
It doesn't come with a monitor either. As a life long Mac user, I'll stick with the desktop iMac. I've got the one with the adjustable arm (20 inch monitor), but am going to give that one to my son and get myself the newest iMac.
The new miniature iPod Shuffle is $150 for a 1GB. About the size of a pack of dentyne gum.
Apple also released the $99 iPod shuffle (Flash based, 512MB) today.
The Shuffle is different from the 4G mini iPod?
Depends on the driver software of the mouse manufacturer. My logitech allows you to program the 2nd button to perform other functions. Mine's set to double-click.
Thanks to both of you! I will have to look into this. :-)
I'm still hoping the 40G iPod will get down to $300 (or less) some day soon, but in the meantime...
Just about any 2 button USB mouse will work with the Mac right out of the box. To get some of the fancier features on some mice to work, you may have to install a driver from the manufacturer.
I'm using a Logitech 5 button/scroll wheel optical wireless mouse with my Mac. The buttons can be programmed separately for each application if you want to.
Yes. It was just introduced. I think it has a flash memory instead of a HD.
LOL.
Not quite, damn near any PC in that price range comes with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. However if you already have such items and standard PC versions would plug in it might be worth looking into.Probably allot more reliable than any PC at that price.
Hm, very nice. Thanks again. :-)
I like that note on the bottom of the page: "Do not eat iPod shuffle."
It uses memory sticks (flash) instead of a hard drive.
I see a lot of negativity on this thread and I think it's a little silly. Allowing people to use their existing keyboards and mice is just a cost-cutting move because a lot of people have them from an old PC. Better that than a $599 base system.
As the owner of a $5,000 plus Mac system (PowerMac G5, Cinema HD Display, 3.5gb RAM, etc, etc), I think this is an excellent thing because it brings more people to the platform and encourages more development. That helps me at the high end as well as those on the low end with the new cheap machines. I'll probably even buy one or two myself for home control and similar applications.
Connecting a 2-button mouse to it will make the second button behave in a similar way to Windows - it will be like Control-clicking the item, which is the same as right-click on a PC.
In other words, it will work just fine out of the box.
Hope that helps.

If the iPod shuffle had a slot for a external SD card, then it would truly be a killer product. I just bought an RCA Lyra 1080, which has an FM tuner and is SD expandable. I put in a 1 GB SD card no problem. SD memory cards are pretty cheap now, too.
I used to be what they called a "Mac evangelist," a person who really loved everything about the Mac and wanted to spread the good news. Back then, I would sometimes remind people that "Mac" is not an acronym. (It's 'Mac' not 'MAC' ;O).
No offense intended.
