Hnida: No amount of money will take pain away
The Today Show, MSNBC ^ | January 11, 2005 | Today Show Transcript

Posted on 01/11/2005 12:57:31 PM PST by CedarDave

In this NBC News interview, “Today” host Katie Couric talks with Katie Hnida, a star high-school athlete who went on to play football for the University of Colorado. But from the beginning, Hnida says, she silently endured a nightmare — some players asked her for sex, others exposed themselves. Worst of all, in the summer of 2000 she says she was raped by a teammate.

Couric: When your story broke, Coach Barnett, as you well know, held a press conference in which he said, "She was awful..."

Hnida: For me that was the Coach Barnett that I knew. That was the way that he had dealt with me throughout the year that I spent with him on his team...

Couric: But, it wasn't just questioning your athletic ability. He said you had kissed everybody on the team.

Hnida: No.

Couric: That you had done lap dances?

Hnida: Unbelievable things. I can handle him saying I'm a crappy kicker... But, to attack my character, to attack who I am as a person is completely unacceptable, and I think it's despicable.

Couric: Coach Barnett says that you complained to him once about a player, and he reprimanded that player. And, that was the only incident he was aware of.

Hnida: I find that hard to believe, because that incident that he reprimanded him for was actually the guy's calling me the "C" word. Later on, in a deposition by the president of the university, she said that it could actually be used as a term of endearment. And that was like a big fat slap across the face, because I could promise you he was not using that in an endearing way, and I don't know any woman who has ever used that in an endearing way.

Don't think the lady should have been treated the way she was, but don't think she should be on a men's football team either.

Call me old fashioned, but women do not belong in forward combat areas or on men's teams.

I still don't like women sports announcers.

I agreee with your statement about her treatment: She should not have been treated that way. I disagree with your perception of your views: You are not old-fashioned, merely logical.

Agreed.

I'm a CU alum. I'm not a huge Barnett fan. However - a number of his comments were taken out of context. When I first heard the "she was awful" comment, I was horrified. I wanted Barnett out. Ends up a reporter asked him what kind of player she was.

In any case, Barnett doesn't deserve a pass, but he didn't deserve the attacks.

And girls need to stick to girl stuff.

A guy called her the "C" word and she ran running to the coach? He is not a babysitter. Rape is an entirely different. If that is true the guilty should be prosecuted.

Agree. It's a problem waiting to happen. IMO In these cases you aren't always dealing with well adjusted, civilized/socialized "Team Mates" and these things are to be expected but not condoned.

The thing is...guys on teams treat other guys like crap as well. It's part of how the game is played. I AM NOT DEFENDING IT! But that is how it is. She forced her way into their world, and then complained about it!

That said...RAPE SHOULD BE PRESECUTED ANYWHERE IT OCCURS!

That about sums it up.

Should I assume that she will not be suing???

For those who may not know why I put NM on as a topic, following her experience at UC, she came to UNM and was a kicker on the football team. Her chance for national glory came in a bowl game a year ago with UCLA when she was tapped to kick a field goal. It was blocked.

The article says that some guys exposed themselves. What exactly was she expecting in a locker room where nudity is prevalent?

Who forced her to stay on the team and take that abuse.

First day was the time to stand up and say in no uncertain terms that will not be tolerated.

"And girls need to stick to girl stuff"

...and that is all that needs to be said. It is so easy, it's scary.

PS: If you would permit me to make a suggestion for your reply when this kind of subject comes up again, and you know as well as I that it will:

"And girls need to stick to girl stuff...end of discussion"

Detroit Tigers star Jack Morris on female sportswriters: "The only time I want to talk to a woman when I'm naked is if I'm on top of them or they're on top of me."

Those were the days, my friend. Those were the days.

Even if Barnett was forced to have this woman on the team, he should have made sure something like this did not happen. These programs hire "assistant coaches" for everything from tutoring illiterate athletes to simply keeping some of their more wayward recruits out of trouble. Hiring one to babysit Hnida and making sure his players behaved. He didn't. I don't think this was stupid as much as it was a passive/aggressive way to teach this young woman a lesson. Whether you believe she should have been on the team is irrelevant. Tacit approval to rape and/or thuggish behavior deserves punishment! Barnett is a creep.

Reminds me of that female reporter a while back who became so traumatized after going into the Patriots' locker room and a few guys dangled their participles at her. Men wil be nude in a men's locker room. No women should be there. Women will be nude in a women's locker room. No men should be there.

(Oh, foop! Diet Coke on the keyboard *again*.) I'm going to start using that instead of "flapping in the breeze."

Hnida: No.

Couric: That you had done lap dances?

I wonder where those quotes came from. They weren't in any of the news stories I heard at the time or in the interview they showed on tv.

Kicking is one of the few areas in wich girls can compete almost on an even level with guys. I once read that although girls have only around one third the upper body strength of men, they have over 90% of the leg strength.

Having said that, I don't think a girl should be playing on a male football team. If they do allow her to play, they should then protect her from sexual attacks.

Along with with women in combat situations you just can't a woman on a men's football team. With the mentality of football players this is just asking for trouble. Am woman just cannot be in that situation or put herself in that situation,it's ticking time bomb that is going to go off with terrible consequences as this poor girl found out.
