Canada Confirms New Mad Cow Case

OTTAWA (AP) -- The Canadian government has confirmed a new case of mad cow disease.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Tuesday the brain-wasting disease showed up in an Alberta cow younger than 7.

Officials say no part of the animal has entered the human or animal feed system.

This is the second case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy found in Canada this year.

Earlier this month, the disease was detected in an 8-year-old cow from Alberta. It was born in the same herd, within one year, of a cow shipped to the United States in February 2002 for immediate slaughter, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

That first case was reported just a day after the United States said it planned to reopen its border to Canadian beef in March. The border was closed in early 2003 after a cow in northern Alberta tested positive for BSE.

That's what we get for feeding cows with cows and pumping them full of hormones to make business better...

Oh, for a moment there I thought they had another Minister snarling remarks about America in general, and President Bush in particular.

The testing frequency of US downer cattle has increased significantly since the last BSE scare. I even got a BSE detecto kit from the state on how to obtain correct samples. The US beef market is getting safer due to Homeland Security and the BSE scares.

"That's what we get for feeding cows with cows and pumping them full of hormones to make business better... "

1) they suspect it was contaminated feed.
2) hormones allow our food prices to be low and countries to sidestep famine.
3) there's absolutely no evidence - even among wacked out environmentalists - that hormones cause mad cow.

Canada Confirms New Case of Mad Cow Disease

Netscape/Reuters article

Canada confirmed on Tuesday it had uncovered a new case of mad cow disease but said the animal in question, a beef cow from Alberta, had not entered the human or animal food systems.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the diseased cow, born after Canada tightened feed restrictions in 1997, was not linked to another instance of mad cow disease announced on Jan. 2 this year.

The new case is Canada's third home-grown incidence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

The previous BSE contaminated cattle were Canadian dairy animals.

This latest incidence of Canadian Mad Cow is from a beef herd with no connection to the previous infected animals.

Stay safe. Buy Texas beef.

The latest incidence is also from a dairy herd. The cow was used to supply extra milk to the beef herd. In recent years the cow was kept as a pet.
Originally the cow came from the same farm as the cow that was found to have BSE in the USA last year.

Actually the wholesale price of beef rallied 10 cents per pound in the last three days.
