You're right about the citations and scholarly stuff, but Alamo girl's work gives the flavor of the era and is real as opposed to one man's rendering of the facts.

Alamo Girl's work is linked from FR and is easy to come by and free. For someone who knows little or nothing, it is a good palace to begin.
