Sounds like there could be a possible Black Conservative ping in all this...
To: Tolerance Sucks Rocks
It should be called the "Black Socialist Caucus."

"Our constituents ... can't afford having their money going into private savings accounts."
Blacks can't afford to save money? How do they get away with such moronic thinking?

"What is the Black Caucus thinking, indeed?"
Its members are thinking "black voters better not hear about individual retirement accounts as part of Social Security, or they're going to start voting Republican and throw us out on our asses."

That should be the Congressional Black (Liberal) Caucus, shouldn't it?
Black conservative ping
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

The average black man dies at age 67.
The average white woman dies at age 87.
Conclusion: the Social Security taxes of black men subsidize the retirement of white women.
Why is Social Security a good deal for black men?

They're thinking, "We will lose power if blacks control their own financial future." You gotta wonder, do the members of the CBC, Jesse, et Al (Sharpton), have investment portfolios?

The outgoing chair of the caucus, Rep. Elijah Cummings, (D-MD) is on record that
"Our constituents ... can't afford having their money going into private savings accounts." Whew. The stupidity is breath taking.

Is this about good economics or is this about power politics?
Is this a trick question?

What's the Congressional Black Caucus Thinking? They're thinking if blacks have an investment in the economy, they will be less likely to be lapdogs for the socialist black caucus and the myriad other socialist organizations which have a vested interest in keeping blacks on the plantation.

I can think of little that would provide a greater boon for the creation of wealth in black America than a provision that would allow black workers to divert their Social Security tax into an individually owned retirement account. But that's why black politicians oppose it. If more black people had their own property, they wouldn't be dependent on government programs, and they couldn't be counted on to vote 90%+ for DemocRATS.

I think describing Social Security as a "nest egg" is all the indication one needs of the problem. By no stretch of the imagination could it be considered such, given that it's not a savings plan but rather an intergenerational transfer of wealth.
If I were a more selfish person, I'd be all for preserving the present Social Security system. I'm swiftly arriving at geezerhood and it'd be great to vote myself even greater benefits and chain the younger generation to the oars to pay for them.

Have they allowed Barbara Boxer into the Black Caucus yet? Wasnt that a part of the deal she made with Tubbs-Jones if she stupidly opposed the electoral college in the Senate?

Simple investing is not rocket science. The fact that so many black Americans do not know the basics is all the more reason to consider this important reform. Another example of the failure of the public school system. Public schools, generally, do nothing to educate students about the basics of economics, let alone investing.

Now, of course, Cummings is going to tell us that putting funds into a private retirement account is risky. But, the fact is that investing over 40 years in a highly diversified fund of stocks and bonds is not a risky endeavor. Government employees can opt out of the Social Security System, into private accounts and this is not risky? The School system is so great that most in power send their children to private schools and not the great public institutions of learning that our country has.

They're thinking "NO, we MUST expand the Welfare stare or risk NEVER gaining absolute control of this decedantly immoral, capitalistic country! It's for the CHILDREN!!"
I thank the author for pointing out what I've been saying since hearing Obama's speech to the Democrat National Convention : Obama is just Dicki Gephardt with better delivery.
