WASHINGTON (AP) -- Newt Gingrich is taking steps toward a potential presidential bid in 2008 with a book criticizing President Bush's policies on Iraq and a tour of early campaign states.
The former House speaker who led Republicans to power a decade ago said he soon will visit Iowa and New Hampshire to promote his book, try to influence public policy and keep his political options alive.
"Anything seems possible," including a White House race, Gingrich told The Associated Press.

I suspect that you are right.
But the immediate dismissal of him by so many leaves me wondering why this is the case.
Gingrich accomplished quite alot for the Republicans, so why do so many Republicans hate him?
My personal choice as the Republican candidate (at least at this time) is Condi Rice. I would love to see a match-up between her and Hitlery!
Pure vanity on Newt's part. His personal morality record stacks up poorly against Clinton's, so I can't believe the religious crowd would go for him.
You and me both. I think it is beyond dumb. Not only should they not do it, they don't have to. There are lots of problems that need to be addressed and W can't do it all. I'm sure he would agree.

I don't think Gramm wants to have to answer questions about Enron. His wife Wendy who previously was the chairman of U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was on the board of directors of Enron on the auditing committee.
He certainly did do a lot for us. Still does too.
I like Newt; met him and got his autograph. I think he's one of the smartest folks around. But he would not be the best candidate.

As much as I like Newt's positions, he did fold in the face of adversity. Now I'm not saying that he didn't have the right to say "enough is enough" and "I don't have to take this any longer," but at a time when his continued leadership was needed, he wasn't there any more. That is fine for a Congressman, a job which the founding fathers viewed as a part time, but is a showstopper for POTUS. Sorry, Newt ... Representative, Senator, commentator, or historian, sure ... but President? No.

Wow, so count Graham out. What a shame.
I say let the boy run if he wants to. Will he win - no. But, he'll be a great foil (imho) to smoke out the bs of the other pubbie candidates. He's a good speaker and a decent conservative (again, imho). Can't hurt.
Soupy Sales will be elected POTUS before Newt gets there.
Hey, I like Newt, but his unfavorables are enormous and since he was a leislative leader, he can be blamed for EVERYTHING, good or ill, that occurred while he was speaker.
He is a great idea man and "bomb-thrower" - and his historical novels are terrific! However, presidential candidate? Next!
But that could work great as a media diversion to sheild other candidates during the primaries.
Jeb Bush is looking better and better....Newt is just too....polarizing....smart man though....just polarizing...
