Have to agree with the ACLU here, as much as it hurts. Without "probable cause," this is like a home invasion on spec.

Aren't we supposed to excerpt NY Times articles?

"They're not supposed to keep it," Mr. Rose said. "If I did something stupid down the road and they had my sample on file, well, then it's an illegal search and seizure."

Libs sure have a strange thought process. "If I did something stupid down the road...."

And how did you determine from the article that he is a lib?

ACLU is right on this one.

No way would I volunteer.

That's a change then. Wasn't NYT one of the papers that sued FR?

What's so wrong with it?
If my DNA is on file, say from birth, it'd make crimes like murder a whole lot more difficult to get away with.
And the downside is? my civil liberties?
Ms. Worthington's "civil rights" certainly have been grossly violated.

In Baton Rouge, La., in 2003, authorities trying to find a serial killer took swabs from 1,200 white men who drove white pickup trucks, but the dragnet did not yield a suspect; a black man was later arrested using other investigative methods...

In BR they told all those who volunteered to give swabs, their sample would be destroyed once they were cleared, or given back to them.

From the above link,

authorities have kept the DNA swabs of the other men and are storing the genetic information in government databases that can be used by law-enforcement agencies investigating other crimes.

What's so wrong with it?

Whenever something was broken in my childhood home of 5 kids, and no one would own up to it, my mother would spank us all to be 'sure she got the right one'. Perhaps this is just not strict enough. Put them all on death row to be sure we 'get the right one'.

What is wrong with you people?

How about a tatto of your name on your forehead at birth so people could ID you when you committ the crime. Better yet, how about a geolocation chip under your skin so when you committ the crime you can immediately be ID'd as being at the scene. Hey, if we keep going we can make this a completely crime free society, kind of like in the book 1984.

Sgt. David Perry of the Truro Police Department and other law enforcement authorities here say that the program is voluntary but that they will pay close attention to those who refuse to provide DNA.

"We're trying to find that person who has something to hide," Sergeant Perry said. -excerpt

No way would I volunteer. -Kid

...and that's the way they like it! Can anyone say "POLICE STATE"?

"I think it's outrageous," said Dick Seed, 44, a Truro sign painter

With a name like that, I can see why he's got a DNA obsession...

...and the database grows! Soon, if a cigarette is thrown out the window, or a candy-bar wrapper dropped on the street, your DNA samples will be used to fine you, or incarcerate you. We all know that gum't doesn't make mistakes!

Red light cameras, speeding cameras, Surveillance cameras with feature recognition software, fingerprint databases, DNA databases, finance databases, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

Feel free to mail a cotton swab of saliva to your state police laboratory for their archives. Just don't ask me to do it. And the downside is? my civil liberties?

No, mine.
