In BR they told all those who volunteered to give swabs, their sample would be destroyed once they were cleared, or given back to them.

From the above link,

authorities have kept the DNA swabs of the other men and are storing the genetic information in government databases that can be used by law-enforcement agencies investigating other crimes.
