Racist Boondocks Cartoon in Sunday papers 1/9/05
Philadelphia Inquirer | 1/9/05 | American Infidel

Posted on 01/09/2005 7:31:05 AM PST by American Infidel

I know I shouldn't be nearly as angry as I am over this (In fact, I know I shouldn't even care), but I couldn't help but notice that featured prominently on the top of the front page of the comic section of today's Philadelphia Inquirer (big surprise) was today's blatantly racist Boondocks comic strip. The strip in question consisted of one frame in which two young black characters observed a white character jogging in the snow while dressed for warm weather. The line written for the black characters is simply “White People”. The implication was obviously that only white people would do something as stupid as to go jogging in the winter, while being dressed for warmer weather. Imagine for a moment that the strip consisted of two white men waiting for a bus to take them to work while observing a black man sitting on the corner, drinking a 40 ounce malt liquor beverage, with the line, “Black People” coming from one of the white characters, implying that only black people would be sitting on the corner on a week day, getting drunk while other people were on their way to work. Not only would this strip never see the light of day, but all future strips from the cartoonist would have been cancelled. The Philadelphia Inquirer on the other hand, chooses to run the strip and to feature it prominently at the top of the front page of the comic section. I understand that Aaron McGruder is the “voice of angry black America” and that he must be treated with kid gloves, otherwise they will be accused of being racist and no corporate entity wants that kind of P.R., but this is ridiculous. It's not the strip itself that ticked me off (it was sort of humorous actually), it was the hypocrisy and the double standard of UPI, the Philly Inquirer, and the other urban newspapers that I am sure ran the strip today. OK that's my rant. Thanks for listening.

Only slightly racist but not very funny.

I looked forward to reading those little (nippers) in the paper every day - it always gave me more proof at their inferiority (the comic - not the species as a whole).

The Connecticut Post (local paper in southwestern CT) picked them up for about a month or so and dropped them without fanfare after people started writing letters; naturally those "at the other end of the greyscale" were incensed at it's being dropped so the paper filled the slot with another similar-type 'comic'.

It reflects a classic (and often true?) racial stereotype:

Black people displaying bitter resentment at white people who work harder at improving themselves while the black people generally do poorly by such measures. (More severe obesity epidemic among American blacks than whites.)

An analogous cartoon could have been a white kid trudging through the snow into a public library with a stack of schoolbooks, while a couple idle black kids stood by bitterly muttering "white kids." It might even be more potent it if were "Asian kids".

You guys are reading this all wrong. The runner is racist, not only because he's white, but also because he is more lightly-clothed and mobile, while his two observers are heavily-clothed and immobile . . . a symbol of the oppression that the African-American (and the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/questioning) community suffers every day!

The two boys attribute him running with no coat, no hat, etc. on in the snow to white people being crazy. I've heard similar come from the mouths of black people.

Let's see...

Two black people standing around doing nothing, ridiculing a hard-working white person.

Yup. That's pretty racist. I wonder if the author understands what it's really saying.

Maybe he does and that's the message.

Boy everyone is reading the wrong thing into this cartoon. Some posts in this thread are showing what some freepers apparently believe about black people more than what this cartoon is saying.

perhaps, we're paying much too much attention to this idiot and his cartoon. Write your paper and tell them to get it off the kids comics page.

It would have been funny if the "jogger" was saying, "Black People! ".

It may not be said where you like but just read this thread. You should be well satisfied with what people are saying on this thread.

Lighten up guys, you sound like a bunch of young buck deer standing in a clearing holding a pissing contest while complaining about the unfairness of high-powered rifles and opposable thumbs.

#42 - Nice.

See as a white racist, I think the white man is just showing the two stuck black people that even in a climate of hardship one can move quickly ahead, thereby showing what is possible.

Of course, the black racist would say that the white guy didn't even bother to stop and help the two stuck black people, leaving them stuck.
