HONOLULU (AP) - A nuclear submarine ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam, injuring several sailors, one of them critically, the Navy said.
There were no reports of damage to the USS San Francisco's reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said.
Jon Yoshishige, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, said the Friday afternoon incident is under investigation and the 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam.
Details on the sailors' injuries were not immediately available. The sub has a crew of 137, officials said.
Military and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said.
Guam is a U.S. territory about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

"There's an off chance that "submarine runs aground" for public consumption is really "other nations sub strikes US sub" in reality. It's happened before:"
Yeah, that falls under what I said earlier about "we were attacked by another nation, and we're saying we ran aground". You're talking about collisions here, but its the same deal - we say a different story for national security reasons. Thanks.

The reason: He cannot command and prepare his defense at the same time.
He may or may not be acquitted of charges at a "Court Martial" and might be able to salvage his career.
In any case, Clancy, he is relieved of command.
It doesn't. The fathometer isn't particularly noisy, but it can be heard.
I did a few of those place...and the Pacific
Sounds reasonable.
Obviously not since they would have stopped and asked for directions.
Hotlanta stayed cursed. Don't know what it was about that boat.
To make such a statement you must not know anything about Halsey's career.
LOL..we used to call it the Mylanta in those days

"The shaft does turn in both directions,"
Yea, I'm sure that's another one submariner's wife has heard. :-)
"The captain is always relieved of command as soon as possible."
Relieved of command temporarily isn't "canned" or "fired" or in any way "sunk". Clearly, folks in this thread are saying that he can be aquitted and live to sub again, as a captain. Others are saying he's going to lose his job.
Clancy's all I have for my submarine lore. But I don't need any book to recognize bs when I hear it.
Poorly charted water. A coral mount that wasn't supposed to be there, but was. The fathometer won't warn you about those. (And neither will sonar).
And how does a submarine free itself - can you just put it in reverse?
Yep. Blow ballast tanks and backup --unless you think you breached the pressure hull, then you stay put and wait for rescue.
Were you onboard when it got a "piece of the rock"?
So did we...LOL
I came on right after. It was still a mess.
