I did have a conversation with a good friend of mine who is a Texan (lives in Massachusetts now) and she told me that it goes both ways. Southerners come up here and make comments about the way northerners do things and northerners do the same when they're in the south.
I've been around southerners who have made fun of the way I talk, but I didn't take it personally--it was all in fun. I love hearing the different accents from around the country. I have traveled in the south and have just always been fascinated with the differences in culture. I don't see it as a superior/inferior type of thing, though.
As far as TWBTS goes, I'm still learning about that and forming my opinions.
Yes, there are many liberal institutions up here and I despise what they're doing as much as you do. But, not all northerners are elitist liberals. I know you know that, though.
My only other comment would be in reaction to your statement that it's a learned behavior. If that's true, you'd think I'd have met ONE person in my 43 years who personifies your description of a "damn Yankee," but I haven't. I've never met one person like this, so I don't know who's doing all this "teaching." Maybe it's something more prevalent in the older generation?
Thanks for explaining. I hope you can chill out a bit, though, lol. If you know that southerners are great, then who cares what a damn Yankee says? That's what I tell my kids when other kids make fun of them. WHO CARES what someone like that thinks of you? Don't waste your time getting upset!

p.s. One funny story for you...we have some good friends who moved from here (NH) to Kentucky and then to Florida. They told us that everyone in the south is named "Bubba." Obviously, they were exaggerating, but I thought that was just a stereotype. Well, when I was in SC a few years ago, I went to a restaurant and the waitress called back to the cook and she called him "Bubba"! I almost fell over! LOL Then I stayed with a friend in VA who told me that that's what she calls her son for a nickname. (I had just finished telling her that story.) I wish I could visit more of the country. Visiting the south has been a lot of fun, but I need to go west! :-)
