"There is one thing now to which I will call your attention. You remember that I proposed to give a week's pay. There are in that House many very wealthy men men who think nothing of spending a week's pay, or a dozen of them for a dinner or a wine party when they have something to accomplish by it. Some of those same men made beautiful speeches upon the great debt of gratitude which the country owed the deceased a debt which could not be paid by money, particularly so insignificant a sum as $10,000, when weighed against the honor of the nation. Yet not one of them responded to my proposition. Money with them is nothing but trash when it is to come out of the people. But it is the one great thing for which most of them are striving, and many of them sacrifice honor, integrity, and justice to obtain it."
I heard the UN is going to administer the aid. I won't be contibuting another cent until I am assured to the contrary. If I want it 'partied' away, I'll give it to my 19 year old son.
excellent post!
thank you for this article that many need to read!
Soon these nations will have more money than us. How do we know the money won't go to the Jihadi in certain nations?
Reminds me of the city of Rang'Shada in Terry Goodkind's "Faith of the Fallen."
BTTT for a great article.
Thanks Colin Powell, don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out. Could it be you have a job lined up with them? Hmmmmmmmmm?
"A Free Buffet and they didn't invite me! Boo (burp) Hoo!"
Ahhh, Tommy DiLorenzo -- a man who makes his living by pouring Wheaties into a bowl of his own urine.....
And thank you, yatros, for the thread.
If you weren't already *pinged* to this article, you are now. :-)
great article
Thanks for the post.

How, oh how, did this country ever achieve it's greatness without foreign aid and assistance???
Thank you, Badray, for the ping!
Thank you yatros for bringing DiLorenzo's piece to our attention.
I heard a speaker say once that when you hear a politician talking about a "crisis," then you'd better start watching out for some new laws to curtail your liberty.
Most of the crises we read about are not crises at all, but they are inventions of some special interest group or some politicians who wish to regulate or tax us. "Crisis Creation" must be the job title for many full-time positions in Washington.
Now, however, a true crisis of biblical proportions occurs, which captures the attention of all of us. It arouses our spirit of compassion, and it also may increase our vulnerability to the designs of what George Washington called "artful" politicians--politicians who may exploit both the victims and the liberty of American citizens.
Our Republic was designed to rely on the intelligence and vigilance of its citizens. Madison and others warned us of the need to watch out for and stop encroachments on our liberty before they take hold.
Helping impoverished nations should not rely only on money and goods and services. Helping them to establish the rule of law and ro provide economic freedom for their citizens will, in the long run, assure that they can create wealth and prosperity for themselves.
O'Rourke, a few years back, wrote "Eat the Rich: A Treatise. . . ," recounting his travels to numerous countries, and, with his usual humor, examined (as had Adam Smith over 200 years before) the causes of the wealth of nations and the happiness of their citizens vs. those sunk in poverty and oppression. He concluded that it was the rule of law and economic freedom that distinguished one from the other.
Particularly after hearing about the rejection of Israel's donation of medical staff, I'm VERY ambivalent about donating to these relief causes. The road to ruin is paved with good intenions, etc. Anyone care to provide a good summary of the pros and cons of donating my hard-earned dollars to those who "look a gift horse in the mouth," so to speak?
Very good article --- worth the read --- but I don't think our government is going to change it's course --- at least if we go around the UN it's something. Besides --- they can just make more money, it's not like our money is really based on anything anymore.
While many Freepers understand and abhor how the oil for food program turned corrupt (not to mention the 9/11 monies donated that were abused) they seem to fail to recognize yet another opportunity created by the tsunami. I'm sure they will after time has elapsed.
