Whole lot of water headed for Cincinnati and points south

A river Flood Warning continues in effect for the Scioto river at
Columbus... Circleville... Chillicothe and Piketon.

A river Flood Warning also remains in effect for the big Darby
Creek at Darbyville and the Olentangy river outside of Worthington.

For Columbus, moderate flooding is occurring, with a stage
of 26.2 feet measured at 2 am. The river is very near crest and
wll crest between 26.5 and 27 feet before sunrise. At stages near
26 feet, lowland flooding worsens... especially in Marion township
near the Scioto. In addition... the city of Columbus continues to
erect the Franklinton flood wall to protect the city itself from
flooding.

For Circleville, moderate flooding is occurring, with a stage of 21.7
feet measured at 2 am. Moderate flooding is forecast, with
the river expected to crest between 23 and 24 feet Thursday night.
The flood stage is 14 feet. At this crest stage, significant flooding
occurs in surrounding areas... especially to the west and north of
Circleville. Moderate flooding occurs along mill and canal roads...
as well as island Road and State Route 762. Backwater flooding affects
areas along big Darby Creek... especially near the old Shady Acres
Mobile Home Park.

For Chillicothe, minor flooding is occurring, with a stage of 16
feet measured at 2 am Thursday. Moderate flooding is forecast, with
the river expected to crest between 23 and 24 feet late Thursday night.
The flood stage is 16 feet. At stages near 24 feet, extensive low
land flooding occurs along the river throughout Ross County, with
evacuations continuing for residents in low areas along the river.

For Piketon, minor flooding is occurring, with a stage of 23 feet
measured at 1 am. Moderate flooding is forecast, with the river
expected to crest near 28 feet Friday afternoon. The flood stage is
18 feet. At stages near 28 feet, flooding affects portions of
Piketon... as well as other towns along the lower Scioto river.

For Darbyville, minor flooding is occurring, with a stage of 12.8
feet measured at 10 PM Wednesday. Minor flooding is forecast, with
the river expected to crest between 14 and 15 feet Thursday night.
The flood stage is 10 feet. At stages near 14 feet, flooding occurs
near the old Shady Acres Mobile Home Park near Circleville. Low
land flooding can be expected along the creek in Pickaway, Franklin
and Madison counties.

For the Olentangy river near Worthington, the latest stage was 9.3
feet at 2 am Thursday. The river has crested... and lowland flooding
will ease in Delaware and northern Franklin counties later this morning.

Do not drive your car through flooded roadways. The water depth may
be deeper than it appears. Stay tuned to developments by listening to

Yes. The report I got yesterday around 5 was they were up. The water now is about (rough calculation) 10' above flood stage in that area.

The flood that I saw in Cincinnati, and I thought it had occurred in the late 1950's, was apparently in 1964.

I do recall a nasty flood here (I live upstream from Cincinati) around '64 in the late spring-early summer.

Just got back. Here's a photo from the Malta side of the Muskingum River. It's a few feet away from the River Queen paddle boat.

Someone told us in the grocery, that they're calling for more rain this afternoon.

Sure looks like you got hit bad. Yeah, the forecasts don't look good at all. With the exception of 1-2 days' off, the next 7 days predict mostly rain.

Goood News: Ohio River at Marietta crested today at 3pm at 43.04', waters starting to slowly recede. Bad News: Radar shows rain as of right now, until Saturday 1PM.

Yessir! The current rain has begun to reverse the recession of the flood waters on 01-07-05. To wit:

3:00PM-43.04'[crested-above flood stage]
3:06PM-42.92' [water's receeding]
7:18PM-42.92'[level stable- but still at above flood stage]
7:24PM-47.36' [water's rising]

The big problem which will show itself in the hours to come is that (check out a weather radar of the Ohio Valley) the current rain is coming from the SW and is going NE and thus, due to its location is traveling right up the Ohio Valley. The geography here is such that all the rain in this nearly mountanous area falls onto saturated ground, thus the run-off is intense and immediate. The course of ALL this run-off is to the Ohio River, which flows SW toward Cincinati, which already is being flooded by it's own local rains.

This has the potential to be a real mess (especially if it freezes and snows...and freezes again.)

When you get a lot of snow that is melted in 2 days it tends to flood. We in Cincinati always get high water after a big snow or lots of rain. There has been a marina under water for the last 2 months so the river has been higher than normal.

Happens every year. At least the last 10 I can remember. I know my work takes me down to a lot of places on the river. Was just at Cargill Corn Silos right on the river yesterday and the water was lapping at the tires where the trucks pull in to unload.

They said it happens every year just earlier this than normal.

Hope you're safe and have access to supplies and necessary services. I think Cincinati and Marietta are going to be hard hit. Evidently Cinci has reconstructed to help prevent flood damage. I 've not been below Dayton since '96, so I don't really know.

But, yeah... as I said before, this is the 6th 100-year flood on my community since 1998.

But, I really don't think Homo sapiens is responsible, let alone one man.

Well, I guessed right. The flood that I remember seeing in Cincinnati, was January 1959; but it was not apparently one of the top ten. (Relief for old memory banks!)
