Possible Questions for Alberto Gonzales [Media Barf Alert]
AP via Great Falls Tribune ^ | Jan 5, 2005 | Associated Press

Posted on 01/05/2005 5:49:51 PM PST by BigSkyFreeper

Some questions that Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales might face at his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Thursday:

---

Q: What was your involvement in President Bush's February 2002 decision to sign an order saying he has the authority to suspend compliance with the Geneva Convention and that prisoner of war status does not apply to al-Qaida or "unlawful combatants" from the Taliban?

Q: Was there pressure to come up with a legal justification to make that decision, and if there was, from whom?

Q: What was your involvement in the now-disavowed Justice Department memoranda that said cruel, inhumane and degrading acts may not be considered torture if they don't produce intense pain and suffering?

Q: Why has the White House and the Justice Department refused to turn over all the documents and memoranda dealing with the treatment and questioning of foreign terrorism suspects?

Q: What was your involvement with the White House decision to classify Jose Padilla as an enemy combatant and hold him without charges in a South Carolina military prison?

Q: Will you recuse yourself from the Justice Department investigation into who in the Bush administration disclosed the name of undercover CIA officer Valerie Plame?

Q: What was your involvement in keeping then-Texas Gov. Bush from jury duty in a drunken driving case in Austin, which helped information on his drunken driving arrest remain concealed?

Q: Will you file briefs calling for a reversal of Roe v. Wade in abortion-related cases before the Supreme Court?

This reminds me of the AP article from years ago on possible questions for Janet Reno. Or does it....

Here's a question for those senators who will be questioning Gonzalez:

"The FBI captures an al Qaeda operative who knows the location of a dirty nuclear device concealed somewhere in the downtown of your state's largest city, which is timed to detonate within one hour. He refuses to reveal where it is. Only torture will make him talk. What would you like the FBI to do? Tick tock, senator."

Sleep deprivation is NOT torture.
Cold showers are NOT torture.
Barking dogs are NOT torture.

The United States signed the Geneva Accord, but the Left in this country will contend that we are in violation of that Accord.

Did the US sign the Geneva Accord?

Part of it, as I thought I heard Rush explain.

If it had turned out that our soldiers took prisoners from Abu Ghraib cell blocks 1A and 1B (dangerous and incorrigible prisoners) and tortured them, I'd have been furious.  But it turned out they only irritated and humiliated them, so I'm not.  But GUESS WHAT? The parts of the Geneva Convention WE are signatories to does NOT cover terrorists, spies, saboteurs, common criminals, non-signers nor combatants out of uniform anyway.  See THIS.
