County unveils possible new logo that some see as homage to president

GEORGETOWN -- "W" or "Dubya"?
Williamson officials unveiled what might be the county's new logo on Tuesday, and it's a giant "W."
"We felt it represents the county well," spokeswoman Connie Watson said.
But some observers see a connection in the choice of the letter for a county rife with "W" bumper stickers and Republican voters dedicated to President Bush.
"Oh, yeah, it was the first thing that crossed my mind: Dubya," Precinct 2 Commissioner Greg Boatright said of the logo, which took four months to produce and cost the county $12,000.
In addition to the giant "W," the logo has the words "Williamson County" and "1848," the year the county was established.
"You've got a county with 27 elected officials, and they're all Republican," said Commissioner Tom McDaniel, who represents Precinct 3. "I guess if you were going to pick a letter, 'W' wouldn't be a bad one."
Still, Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Jimmy Rocha bristled at the design.
"I definitely think it's partisan," Rocha said. "Everybody knows what W stands for."
The logo was created by Georgetown company GX Creative Communications, which also designed that city's new logo -- a less potentially politicized cursive "G" that was also unveiled Tuesday.
"We went through a lot of 'W's,' " said Judith Manriquez, a partner in the design firm.
A group of elected officials and county employees chose the final design, which was presented to the Commissioners Court on Tuesday. The group did consider an alternate final design, Watson said -- another "W."
The commissioners will decide whether to make the "W" the county's official logo at their Jan. 18 meeting. If they vote for the logo, only departments directly under the control of the Commissioners Court, such as elections and roads, will be required to use it.
Watson said she is sure the logo is not meant to evoke the president.
"This is a coincidence," she said. "Another four years, and I don't know who will be elected president after that. W is for Williamson County. That is our initial."
"I definitely think it's partisan," Rocha said. "Everybody knows what W stands for."
Looks like the Williamson County Republicans are getting on the nerves of the RATs.
Hey, Jimmy. W is for wuss in your case. Oh, and don't speed through Georgetown.
Hey Jimmy, "W" stands for WINNER...and you're a LOSER!!!
Let's not worry about taxes, crime, or out-of-control government.
Let's spend enough to buy a new county vehicle on a freakin' LOGO, and have to listen to the 'Rats whine like pubbies invented the alphabet just to piss 'em off!
Not to mention, they also have to live in GEORGEtown. I guess whoever named the town was partisan also. HAHA
Williamson County needs to get rid of Mike Krusee thanks to his HB3588. You can thank him for the Trans-Texas Corridor and the plan to toll all commuter highways in the area. Mr. Boatright, did you vote for the CAMPO toll plan? Fess up. See you at the polls!
The Rats can't get over the fact that Williamson Co. is all Republican and sooooo close to Austin. The Statesman thinks is speaks for all of central Texas, which is far from true.....if we had another paper in the area, Williamson Co. residents would not buy the Statesman!!!!

My home county. I guess I can leave 'W' stickers on my truck long after "Our W" has long retired from office... heh-heh.
King George or George Washington . . . Ok not Tory.
I live in a heavy Republican area of Travis Co., and would love to have anything but the Austin Ultra Liberal, Un American, Longhorn, Non Statesman to read. I may cancel my subscription to that rag next time it comes up for renewal. The anti Bush and anti Republican garbage that paper prints, is a waste of trees.
>Oh, and don't speed through Georgetown.<
Williamson County....come on vacation, leave on probation.
Nice job, Jimmy. Williamson County, Texas 2004 Presidential election returns:
Bush 83,284 (65.0%)
Kerry 43,177 (33.6%)
Other 1,797 (1.4%)
I still have the 2002 Bush/Cheney sticker on my pickup. Also, the 04 and the W04 oval stickers. I have had people tell me I am #1 on more than one occasion.
ME TOOOO!!!!
Too bad someone can't start a successful newspaper in this area that is not purely Democratic Party leaning.....
These guys need to stop uihining and get back to uiork
Our local paper in Lago Vista is strictly right leaning. The few libs there hate reading it, and write some really stupid letter to the editor.
One also writes an occasional letter to the Austin Rag as well.
Georgetown, Williamson, GW. Or just G.
