Foster's Lager to be brewed in Turkey

Foster's Group Ltd will be selling its own brand of Turkish delight after a signing a deal for Foster's Lager to be brewed, marketed and distributed in Turkey.

Foster's said distribution of the lager, through Turkey's Efes Beverage Group, gets underway in March.

Foster's said while beer consumption per capita is relatively low by European standards, at around 11 litres per annum, Turkey has the second largest and one of the fastest growing populations in Europe.

The brewer said the international premium beer segment in Turkey is expected to double over the next three years.

Foster's Brewing International managing director Rick Scully said Turkey had great potential for international premium beers with the market expected to double over the next three years.

"Foster's is the world's seventh largest international beer brand, but to date has been under-represented in Eastern Europe and Central Asia," Mr Scully said.

"Efes is a natural partner for Foster's in Turkey whose strong distribution capability brings an excellent opportunity to build a strong presence for Foster's in a key growth market, as an international brand with a distinctive, premium positioning."

Efes president and chief executive Muhtar Kent said the local beer market had experienced rapid growth over the last five years with international brands the fastest growing segment.

"I believe Foster's will be an attractive choice for Turkish beer consumers due to the unique Australian-ness of the Foster's brand, together with Foster's Brewing International's stringent focus on freshness and dedication to product quality," Mr Kent said.

No arguments from me: Fosters is a good drop and worthy of a "session" anywhere...but Turkey?

I thought Turkey is a Muslim country, and the Muslims are OFF the grog (could explain a lot, actually).

WHAT'SGOINONHERE?

Maybe the Turkish polluted groundwater will improve its taste. Fosters makes Canadian beer seem tasty.

I've never tasted Canadian beer, but there's nothing wrong with Fosters.

If any of this brew is exported to the U.S., that will end my consumption of Fosters

Canadian beers taste like Bud Light, with a bad aftertaste. As for Fosters, well, I'll just call it uniquely Australian.

Right. And they make the can the right size, too.

I never had it but my brother had a beer can collection when we were growing up and I remember that huge oil can looking thing like it was yesterday. On a side note, I hate Australian Cabernet. Sorry. Hahahaha

Foster's Bitter is my favorite next to a dark and nasty stout.

Local Turkish beers are extremely good, Efes is as good a beer as you could find anywhere. One of the most important qualities for a good beer, local production, volume turnover, freshness.

I was at a Greek Restaurant last week having a Gyro - when I asked for a beer, I didn't bother asking for a specific brand as there was only one kind of beer looking bottle in the beverage case.

Imagine my surprise when I saw I was drinking an Efes - product of Turkey.

Suffice to say that the beer and the food got along great.

I was in Baghdad back in 1983. I was surprised to find that the Ephesus beer was quite good, and brewed in Turkey. I don't remember any Iraqi beer, but there was also plenty of European beers to be had in the hotels there.

You should try an Emu Lager. It is made from sheep dip.

I thought Turkey is a Muslim country

Turkey has a securlar government, and religious taboos don't translate into civil law. Alcohol is served everywhere in Turkey, and is widely consumed by the locals as well as by foreigners.

I have yet to try an Aussie beer that has prompted me to order another. Just a beer snob in the great NW USA, I guess.
