DES MOINES (AP) - A southeast Iowa lawyer has appealed a judge's decision to dismiss a lawsuit that asked the state to give driver's licenses to a Mexican couple who are in the country illegally.

The Mexican couple in their 30s with three chidren work in Des Moines, where they have lived for the past five years.

Attorney Curt Daniels said the couple received $1,000 in traffic tickets in one weekend. He claimed they were singled out because they are undocumented immigrants.

Daniels wants the state to allow them to apply for licenses.

"Their situation is just outrageous," he said. "There are thousands and thousands of them in Iowa alone."

Daniels refused to identify the couple and filed the lawsuit with fake names - Juan and Maria Sanchez.

The Iowa Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case Jan. 13.

The lawsuit was thrown out a year ago by Polk County District Judge Joel Novak, who said the couple had no fundamental right to obtain licenses to drive in Iowa.

they need no special rules, their Mexican license is perfectly legal here - could it be they don't want to use their REAL names?

That IS outrageous. Every one of them is breaking the law by just being here. Why aren't they being deported?

"their Mexican license is perfectly legal here"

Well now that all depends on their status. Considering the fact that their status is: illegal, I don't see why they haven't already been plopped on a bus and shipped back to Mexico. Why isn't the INS dealing with these people already?

Why would anyone expect an illegal to obey any law?

could it be they have no Mexican DL AND are here illegally

or the have a Mexican DL AND are here illegally.

at least this article call them "illegal" and not
"undocumented guest workers".

No worry, the asinine attorney has been reported as a felon aid to illegals....;-)

He won't give their names, but his is all over court documents as a felon aiding them. ROTFLMBO!!

Apparently he's not too bright.

Maybe they accrued $1000 in traffic violations in a weekend BECAUSE THEY CAN'T READ ENGLISH!

partly right........the correct full answer would be a picture of the entire Congress as well........they are the ones that make the frigging laws, and Bush won't enforce them

Beat the rush. Contact your Senators and Representatives in advance of the new immigration legislation. Encourage your relatives and friends to do the same. This is serious. The invasion is in the South and West for the time being. It will come to your neighborhood soon if something isn't done. If something isn't done get ready for a real change in your standard of living. Unless you are among the wealthy who benefit from "Cheap labor".

Fortunately, my senators Kennedy and Kerry, as well as my rep Markey, are always favorably responsive to my opinions. (Not.)

I'm not sure that we need any new laws. The current ones already say we throw these illegals out. As with the gun laws, let's start enforcing the ones we have (paging President Bush...) before we think of making new ones.

In Arizona they don't need a DL or insurance. Also, why buy a car when you can steal one? A while back a legal immigrant caught an illegal stealing his truck and shot him, the legal almost went to prison for it.

Thank God for Judge Novak, the only good judge left in Polk County! If all of them were like him, I might still live there, rather than be taken to the cleaners in divorce court.
