Let's hope Congress does tackle the EMP issue. There has to be something, within Constitutional bounds, that they can do about this.

The Wall Street Journal did not ignore the Commission's report on the perils of an EMP attack. It published an editorial warning that China and Russia have the capability to launch an EMP strike against us. Over the next 15 years our relations with these countries are likely to be volatile and unpredictable. Russian Duma members threatened us five years ago. Chinese publications have carried articles about EMP, including threats to use EMP to neutralize our aircraft carriers if we were to war with China over Taiwan. The Commission appeared most concerned about an EMP attack from terrorists or rogue states who believe they have absolutely nothing to lose.

God help anyone who actually does this to us. Even the liberals would be on board for retaliation (for about 24 hours) if someone took out their means of making lattes.

EMP arguments over nuclear weapons being exploded in the United States by an enemy is "Magic Christian" script stuff.

If nuclear pulses generated by nuclear weapons cause me to go without electicity or an ATM for a month, I'd see that as a plus............For I'd think experts would consider the more obvious problem?

Seems to me we should simply do the same thing we'd do if we were subjected to any other kind of nuclear attack: nuke the bejeezus out of whereever the things came from. That policy has worked pretty darn good for the last 50 years. No reason to change it now.

File this one under important things being debated for all the wrong reasons, Like stronger screen doors on a submarine! GOPUSA needs a cerebral enema.

Did you even read the article?

It didn't say exploded 'within' the United States, it said exploded 'over' the U.S. at high altitude.

Something the Russians and Chinese could easily accomplish.

And the power loss wouldn't be a month, but possibly a year.

BTW. You needn't worry about using your ATM, because you wouldn't be able to get go it. Unless you WALK!

Underground fiber otpics......this would prevent any EMP attack from being sucessful.

Underground wiring is essential especially when dealing with natural disasters such as tornados and hurricanes.

Underground wiring and underground fiber optics would get rid of a lot of ugly eyesore telephone poles and make outages from weather a thing of the past.

No they wouldn't they would be worried about why we caused it in the first place, because if we didnt have nuclear weapons, it would have never happened at all...and they would blame Ronald Reagan to GWB for keeping the weapons, and Richard Nixon for the SALT talks...and so on.

If any nation launched a nuke over our territory in that fashion it would be an act of nuclear war and we'd retaliate in cold-war fashion. It's absurd to think we'd track a missile, let it blow up, and then not respond to it like any other ICBM attack.

Throughout the Cold War, a nuclear triggered EMP was always expected at the opening of a nuclear clash between superpowers.

The military always radion hardened it's electronics although I think that mil-spec policy changed under klinton.

"...threatened that if Russia really wanted to hurt us without fear of retaliation, Russia would launch a missile against us from a submarine, explode it high over our skies and"

But, apparently russia thinks there would be no way to retaliate. I don't know.

Never said we wouldn't 'retailiate'!

Hopefully our missle defense system would be totally in place before that could happen.

No, this is the real deal on EMP. A high altitude burst would cripple us. This isn't Y2K all over again.

It doesn't have to be nuclear...

CBU-94 "Blackout Bomb"
BLU-114/B "Soft-Bomb"

The BLU-114/B is a special-purpose munition for attacking electrical power infrastructure. Although very little is known about this highly classified weapon, reportedly it functions by dispensing a number of submunitions which in turn disperse large numbers of chemically treated carbon graphite filaments which short-circuit electrical power distribution equipment such as transformers and switching stations. The weapon is sometimes referred to as a "soft bomb" since its effects are largely confined to the targetted electrical power facility, with minimal risk of collateral damage.

This previously undisclosed weapon, carried by the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter, was used for the first time on 02 May 1999 as part of Operation ALLIED FORCE strikes against Serbia. Following these attacks lights went out over 70 per cent of the country.

I am not sure that is the issue.

The issue is transistors and chips that would be internally melted or shorted.

That means whatever generates the signal to be transmitted over the fiber optic line would be non functional because the chip that processes the math would not work: hence: not even the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!

In fact, your car would die, too, there are many chips in your car's computer, too.

No radios. No television unless it is tube technology, but the transmitters would be fried locally.

Cable TV might work from a long distance, but not from the local stations.

Your satellite receiver would be fried because the box has chips in it.

Time to go analog!

That or build a lead shield around your house!
