there's ONE scenario that gives this the hint of credibility..assume, hypothetically, that we grabbed him..most likely he raided a safe house, caught him and a few aides..and were able to monitor that there were NO transmissions from the site before the raid..ergo..the terrorists don't KNOW for sure that their head honcho has been caught. we want to keep them guessing.and we want to interrogate him, without having to play nice by the rules..so, we'd never admit to having him..

I hope we caught him it, at the very least it would be a great moral victory. but Zarqawi arrests seem to be like Elvis sightings these days

I'm not discounting the story for that very reason. Well, that reason, and the fact that its gratifying to believe it true.

There's a lot of smoke...

I would expect that Allawi would be the man to bring this public, not the Pentagon. This would be a huge political victory for him on the eve of elections, and would hopefully raise the morale of the electorate - the Bogeyman is off the streets.

So, with that in mind, I think we should see what Iraqi leadership does...

I've been listening to FOX for a couple of hours or 2, & haven't heard a word regarding his capture. Not yet, anyway. I did hear his name mentioned when they discussed the asassination of the governor & his 6 bodyguards, saying that it was done by his supporters; but that's it.

Even as I write this, they mentioned the headlines after a commercial break & nothing was said about it.

It's like a game of "telephone". Before it's over, some Pakistani newspaper will proclaim the capture of Regis Philbin.

They'll never get Regis! He's too cool. Donald Trump, well, that's another thing enirely.

OK I have two choices:
1 - Forward this story as "breaking news" to all my friends at work, only to take a big chance of apologizing for jumping the gun once again and taking all their flack for getting my news from freerepublic. Or,
2 - WAIT for conformation and miss-out on breaking a BIG STORY.

I'm choosing option 2. My bet is this is a bogus story. I sure hope I'm wrong.

it'll never be admitted to publicly...because then the media cries will begin about his "treatment" and interrogation, and you'd have to have a trial....nope..he's a goner..

Sheesh how many al-Zarqawi's are there?

We've caught him at least 6 times today and at least 4-5 times in the last 6 months.

Sort of like the bin Laden rumors of capture in Iran starting last January.

I hope it's true but waiting for the confirmation.......

(note: was posting this to one of the duplicate threads when it got pulled)

Iraq is sovereign. He'd be under their jurisdiction - and at this point, I don't think the Amnesty International types hold much sway with Baghdad. I suppose we could extradite him to the U.S. for crimes against Americans, but his rap sheet is much longer against other Iraqis.

I agree, I don't know why we keep them alive. Better that they should just disappear from the face of the earth and take their evil with them. I think just disappearing would be more frightening than anything--did they die, are they hiding from danger, did they go over to the other side, it is the most upsetting scenario in my estimation.

I'm sure we got this guy a few days ago, as you suggest, and are trying to trace back to OBL.

Absolutely great news.

Someone made note of the sudden shift of hunting Bin Laden in cities instead of the mountainside. I don't think it's farfetched to theorize that this could be related to a Zarqawi capture and some useful information....

It's kind of fun to speculate. But we'll know probably before noon whether or not these reports hold water.
