Perhaps sad and true.  But they are not programmed to KILL like that 'other' disparate culture.

Do you ever think that maybe we always interfere with the natural progression of civilization? Maybe some of these societies are supposed to be gone by now. Look at AIDS, if it were not for our intervention in Africa, how much of the population would have died? I know these are outrageous comments, but I think they are worth discussing. Similar problem in the Irish Catholic community. Exemplary is the story of the teenaged Irish daughter who had gone away from home, and not returned for over 5 years. One day, she unexpectedly showed up on the doorstep. Her father answered the door, and berated her:

"Where have you been all this time, you ingrate! Why didn't you write us, not even a line to let us know how you were doing? Why didn't you call? You little tramp! Don't you know what you put your Mum and me through??!!"

The girl, crying, replied: "Sniff, sniff... Dad... I became a prostitute..."

"WHAT!!? Out of here, you shameless sinner! You're a disgrace to this family - Go now, and don't darken this doorway again!"

You present an interesting idea but many good civilizations have been created by force. I do think that an "intermediate" approach such as we practice in Africa now rarely works, though. Either we conquer or we leave a culture to their own devices.

Practically every country "liberated" by the voluntary disintegration of the British Empire has gone to Hell in a handbasket. There is much to be said for a civilizing influence, whether it's imposed or chosen.

Keep in mind this is from a writer with the New York Times. Why would girls from Yunnan go to Malaysia to be a prostitute when they could be one in China much easier? I am very skeptical of it.
