Government won't protect you

If you are waiting for the U.S. government to protect you from nuclear terrorism, I've got news for you: It's not going to happen.

Despite the fact that virtually every national-security expert and public official agrees it's not a question of "if," but only "when" Islamic terrorists will attack our cities with a nuclear or radiological device, government is not preparing the people for the impending disaster.

Plans are being made by Osama bin Laden to kill tens of thousands of Americans – maybe millions – but no plans are being made by the U.S. government that will help us survive and recover.

Maybe you think I'm a "chicken little."

Don't take my word for it.

Read what four non-alarmists with impeccable establishment credentials wrote in the Wall Street Journal just before Christmas in a column that was overlooked by most everyone in the media. I don't agree with these gentlemen or the Council on Foreign Relations on much, but this time, they got it right.

Former Sens. Warren B. Rudman and Gary Hart were co-chairmen of the U.S. Commission on National Security in the 21st Century. Leslie H. Gelb was a commission member and Stephen E. Flynn was an adviser.

They are trying to tell us something.

Our hair is on fire, yet no one seems to notice. We go about our daily business as if all is normal – as if there is no threat or nothing we can do about it.

We are naked against this inevitable attack.

"Enough playing politics," they write. "Enough excuses. Shame on our leaders and on us if the lamentations of the next blue-ribbon panel will be intoned over the graves of hundreds of thousands of Americans, the collapse of our economy, and perhaps a fatal blow to our way of life. Our hair is on fire."

These are strong words from serious people.

And they are right.

But I don't believe for a minute the U.S. government will come around on this issue until it is too late. Sept. 11 should have been the wake-up call, but it clearly was not. Now many will die needlessly because government officials won't act.

It doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to be a victim. Your children don't have to be victims of government neglect and shortsightedness. There are prudent steps that every responsible American citizen can take to protect his or her family.

You may not be able to safeguard against every eventuality, but you can make simple, inexpensive preparations that could mean the difference between life and death.

What can you do?

For starters, go to perhaps the best civil-defense website on the Internet. There you will most of the information and supplies you will need – most of it absolutely free.

Don't wait until it is too late. Don't wait until the attack happens. Spend some time reading about the simple preparations most of us can make to survive anything but a ground-zero attack.

You don't have to become an expert. You don't have to be a rocket scientist. You just need to have a plan.

The information you need is readily available. The supplies you need are not expensive. So what are your excuses now?

Don't blame government if you won't take the steps necessary to protect your own life and the lives of those you love.

Sure, Washington should be leading. But don't wait for what is not going to happen. Don't wait for government to do the right thing. Don't wait for panic to start.

Go to the place I go for the direction and basic survival supplies Washington won't give you. Make it your new year's resolution to be prepared.

This writer is correct. Pretend you're a Boy Scout again and be prepared. I have heard otherwise sensible people say they wouldn't want to live through a nuclear strike ... but they forget that they are much more likely to be on the fringes of an attack, rather than on Ground Zero, and a little bit of preparation might pull them through with no deaths in their family.

I particularly recommend Dean Ing's book, Pulling Through, which has great info on just this kind of scenario. It is out of print now but I just zipped over to Amazon and they have used copies. Excellent book.

OK -- so this is the Joseph Farah who spent most of the election year withholding support for President Bush. Why give him airtime?

You can either buy the book or download free version. The quick reference cards in the back are an excellent source.

I hate when they make the chapters separate downloads.

I think they do that in hopes you'll spring for the $28.00 book. The little cards are first rate, though, and should be read by all family members above a certain age.

Joseph Farah, in the final days of the campaign, decided to vote for Bush ;-)

I know. But his attitude in the interim was tiring, at best.

Anyhoo, Happy New Year, Valued Friend!

And when Ridge recommended we have an emergency plan, a medical kit, water and other supplies, INCLUDING PLASTIC SHEETING AND DUCT TAPE, the media had a field day ridiculing him.

"OK -- so this is the Joseph Farah who spent most of the election year withholding support for President Bush. Why give him airtime?" What is your point? It's immaterial who he did or did not support in the election. Farah makes a very valid point, we are unprepared for the detonation of a weapon of mass destruction in the United States. Don't shoot the messenger, instead demand action by our elected officials.

Nuclear War Survival Skills

I printed this whole book out years ago and bound it in a 3-ring notebook with dividers. Some good info to keep on hand.
