There is a certain amount of self-inflation that occurs in individuals working with or exposed to higher energies (good and bad). It is one reason traditional Catholics and ethical Hindus assign mystics/disciples spiritual directors.

Perfection in a human being is hard to define. I have done bad things in the past, but I believe my merit points far outweigh my demerit points.
I use the J.L.S. story as a metaphor. Even the main character in the book had faults. Defining the highest reaches of human endeavour, in all fields, i.e. Spiritual, Physical, Creative etc, is a good thing for people to do. When the truly wise people on the planet are recognized for who they are, a righteous government may prevail. Humankind needs leadership, just as a child needs parents.
