TORONTO - Canada confirmed Sunday that a second case of mad cow disease has been discovered, just days after the United States said it planned to reopen its border to Canadian beef.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Sunday an older dairy cow from Alberta tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, otherwise known as mad cow disease.
The preliminary testing results were completed on Wednesday and released early Thursday morning.
well that may send resumption of imported canadian beef back another few years.
Madeline Albright back in town?
ping
I won't comment because there will be those who suggest I put my tinfoil hat on.
Lots of canned goods have labels that say "Product of Mexico". [or wherever]
Armor and Hormel corned beef reads "product of Argentina".
Why don't packages of beef cuts [or other fresh meats, for that matter] have any "point of origin" statements on them?
I want to know if *any* meat I'm buying comes from Canada so I can make the choice *not* to buy it.
I didn't know Madeline Albright moved to Canada!!!!
Was Hillary Rotten Clinton visiting Canada?
Well I see YaPoo News bent over backwards to flesh out the details on this piece. (/sarcasm)
Prairie
And they wonder why we have a ban on their beef....
How long is it going to take for them to learn not to use Neurological tissues from infected animals to feed their livestock????
How do you know it's not happenning in the US as well? Afterall, banned items are still making it to the grocery store ...

The timing of their 'discovery' is suspect.....;)
The people "slipping it through" should have their damn arms broken.
[but that's just my utterly non-humble and knee-jerk reactive opinion]...:)
but at least their honest...
What's the chance it's only Canada and the US comes always squeaky clean ?
Something isn't right here...
BTT!!!!!!
" The timing of their 'discovery' is suspect.....;)"
canadian beef markets are in asia but the cattle are processed south of the border. asians and especially the japanese are very concerned about mad cow and the US responded to their concerns by shutting out canadian cattle and make american exports appear safe.
the US ban was a disaster for western canada's beef industry because they're unable to process the cattle themselves. in response to the US ban there is now a movement among western canadian producers to set up in house processing and market directly to asia.
a system that includes testing EACH head of cattle for mad cow. a 100% security that should be well recieved in asian markets
the other strategy was to "shoot, shovel, and shut up", cover up any other cases of mad cow and quietly re-enter the US market.
in all honesty it's highly unlikely mad cow hasn't surfaced in the united states and is exclusive to canada since it is very much a north american industry.
i agree the timing is suspect.
if western canada beef producers are serious about marketing their own beef as 100% free of mad cow then it is in their interest to be candid about the problem and appear to be effectively containing mad cow to the feed lot
