Brainy girls have marriage handicap
the Australian ^ | January 03, 2005 | "correspondents in London"

A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.

The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.

But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.

The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.

Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."

Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.

"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.

"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

The guys say that these women worked too many hours to socialize normally and expected Prince Charming to show up at their door and then be subservient to their career. BTW, with all of the money these MBA women made over the years, they look great even today thanks to spas, surgery, $200 haircuts, etc. Their attitude is pretty sour, but they look good!

It'll be interesting to see what their attitudes are like, when they're all in their 70's and hanging out together at the Old Folks home, or assisted living joint.

Tell me about it. My Master's in Physics sits on the wall, but I've been in software development from even before my bachelor's. (I even went at night later on for a Master's in software engineering just so I could have something in my field). Go figure. Some days I wonder why I even bothered, especially since all of the skills I use were learned on the job. About the only class I really use these days is the creative writing class from my undergrad days...I like to write fiction in my spare time. Otherwise...(sigh)

Well, I pretty much could not do my job without my degree. But I got to avoid the garbage that infests academia these days.

Now you know why I'm not married - what starts as "cute peculiarities" devolves into "annoying habits" :)

I think you are on to something here. University trained women are often victims of the most nauseating FemiNazi indoctrination, which renders them severely handicapped in the happy marriage and kids department.

That has been my experience also. They may want to be married
but only under their terms, which eliminates most males that
are capable of procreating.

Arrogant, pompous egomaniac seeks desperate, lonely, pathetic woman with low self-esteem who is nearing menopause. Must be willing to keep opinions to (a) a minimum and (b) yourself. Low standards and high income both a plus. Send nude photos to: AmishDude, ...

Me too, I had one once, nice furry little creature, loved the hell out of her, work was an option never needed the extra bucks.

Her hormones gave out at 46, needed out reach, divorce, to rediscover the options that she never had the opertunity to explore. Never own one again. Lovely woman in her time.

It is kind of funny...all the professional women I know are pretty much basket cases that alternately seek out, then run in panic from, my wife's sagacious council. Their careers are peachy, but they seem to revert back to gum-snapping teenagers when it comes to their personal lives. It's like the concept of cost/benefit just goes out the window for some fairy tale notion that no decision, action, or comment should ever impinge on what they think they are entitled to; and I use the term "entitled" in its fullest sense.

High IQ and being oversexed seems to turn men off too.

There's a great book, that you don't need, but sounds like your friends might, and maybe another freeper or two will like it.

The Millionaire Next Door

I'll give y'all the key secret: don't borrow except for a reasonable home; live well within your means, and save. That is how you accumulate wealth instead of look well-off by leading a hand-to-mouth existence at a high level.

In other words, being frugal moves your piece a lot further down the board than high earning. My mother and father, brother and sister-in-law, and I, independently, could have been the subjects of the dang book.

The reason this is germane to the thread, IMHO, although we appear to be pretty far afield, is this: the original article seems to conflate high-IQ with high-pressure-employment. IMHO there are other things besides IQ that make the researchers' career-oriented women unhappy in love. One of them is that for a couple to match, money attitudes need to match. A young couple (early twenties) is more likely to resonate financially than a couple that has been developing independently for 15 or 20 years, or a couple with a big imbalance in age or other societal criteria... if what I am saying makes any sense. I am always being fixed up with gals that are 35+ and haven't got the proverbial pot to you-know-what, just a 15 year history of making $120k a year as a marketing VP, spending it all on stuff that becomes part of next year's Goodwill [charity] pickup. Gimme an honest teacher or nurse or assistant librarian who lives within her means, and buys the clothes from the Goodwill store for 10¢ on the dollar!

The money or earning ability you bring to a marriage need not match, but your attitude towards money needs to be close enough to be compatible. This is one of the many independent variables that the study makes no effort to measure or (obviously) control for.

PS - oh yeah, another thing. College degrees, as many have pointed out, are not particularly useful as markers for intelligence. A lot of those MBA-equipped marketing VPs got through school on drudgery, not ability. And don't even get me started on Ed.D. That's roughly equivalent to being graduated from middle school. Now, show me a degree in the hard sciences or maths and I'm impressed. Most liberal arts degrees are a union card that indicates you endured four years of hazing at College X - period.

Ouch, even I'm not that harsh.

I think this is the flaw in the article --- a copy of "mum" for an intelligent man is likely a brainy woman --- but maybe not a career woman. Not all career women are especially brainy, not all old-fashioned wives are stupid.
