Russia to build oil pipeline on Japan-proposed Pacific route

Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 07:37 JST

MOSCOW — The Russian government announced Friday it has decided to build an oil pipeline on a Japanese-proposed Pacific route for transporting oil from eastern Siberia to Nakhodka. Japan and China had proposed different routes for the pipeline to be built for access to the Russian oil.

The Japanese proposal calls for Russia to build a pipeline from Angarsk, near Lake Baikal, to Nakhodka on Russia's Pacific coast, a route that allows Moscow to ship oil not only to Japan but also to other Asian countries and the United States. In Tokyo, the Japanese government welcomed the Russian decision, with one government source describing it as "a step forward" toward Japan's engagement in the pipeline project. (Kyodo News)

Gulf Daily News: Moscow backs oil pipeline to Pacific

Sunday 2 January 2005

MOSCOW: Russia said yesterday it had ordered the construction of an oil pipeline from its huge Siberian oilfields to the Pacific Ocean opposite Japan, in a move to boost export opportunities throughout East Asia and to the United States.

A "system of pipelines" with an annual capacity of 80 million tonnes would be built from Taishet in Siberia to Perevoznaya near Vladivostok and the eastern port of Nakhodka, the government said in a statement.

Energy-thirsty Asian rivals Japan and China have been furiously competing for several years for access to supplies from the world's second biggest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia.

But the 4,130km link to Nakhodka become the preferred option earlier this year after lengthy talks with Tokyo, which has said it would finance its construction.

No price tag was put on the project, but Russian officials have said previously it would cost some $16 billion or almost seven times the cost of the alternative option to China.

Moscow's decision to pump its vast eastern Siberian oil supplies towards Japan will come as a blow to China, whose energy-hungry economy has turned it into the world's second largest oil consumer after the US.

Negotiations with China were complicated by environmental concerns, with neither side able to agree on the route.

And for Russia, the Pacific route means that besides Japan, it could supply oil to other countries in the region, including South Korea, and even, potentially, the west coast of the United States.

Officials in Beijing have raised the possibility that a branch of Russia's Pacific pipeline could be diverted eventually to China, where energy demand continues to outpace supply, although there was no mention of this in Friday's statement from Moscow.

Very smart - this pipeline could serve the entire Pacific rim.

Now how about building the Bearing Straights bridge?

Now how about building the Bearing Straights bridge?

Do you have any estimates on the approximate traffic volume on such a bridge ? Further, what would be the toll charge to make such a bridge feasible ?

How do you build a bridge between to MOVING tectonic plates? And in the ring of fire, no less.

No thanks, I'll swim.

The Bering Straits is a very hostile environment. Its unlikely such a bridge could be open more than half of the year. There are no major roads on either side. Thousands of miles of new roads would have to be built. What would be the purpose?

Not to pile on, but another problem is that it has to be high enough to clear ice beneath it. Any bridge that high and that long will not see my vehicle. It would scare the heck out of me. :)
One question I have is why are not all the enviro-whackos not going crazy over a pipeline like this. It's OK for Russia but not for the US?

Well, it looks like Japan did outbid China. This is good news indeed for Japan.

Pipelines are actually safe and clean - Euro whackos prefer pipelines as a means of oil transport.

I own two hardcover books that one and another one which I can't remember. While I am a child of the 80s I am a comic book collector and I have this weird love of American pulp and comic book fiction circa the 50s and 60. For me as a historian it gives me a glimse of how Americans talked, thought, wished. Innocent even corny but great stuff. I would love to buy your entire collection outright sight unseen if you still have them.

I can check with my folks, but I am afraid they were probably donated to library many years ago.
